COVID-19 Vaccines and Treatments

In November 2020, exciting news arrived about COVID-19 vaccines. Pharmaceutical companies like AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna reported that their vaccines were showing highly effective results. This news was especially good to hear as many parts of the world braced for a strong resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

Here is some insight into the current guidelines set out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on what we all should know about vaccination protocols as we move into 2021.

What every person should know about the COVID-19 vaccines

  • Safety first – Despite the significant pressure to develop an effective vaccine, no vaccination process will be approved for emergency use unless it is considered as safe as possible. We’re all impatient for the pandemic to end, but the last thing anyone wants is to put people at unnecessary risk.

  • Vaccine treatment processes will be flexible – The CDC will work with healthcare associations in each state to develop flexible processes for delivering the vaccine to ensure a steady, efficient rollout. This is about planning for many different possibilities, so be prepared for plans, treatments, and processes to change a bit as new circumstances develop.

  • What is Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) – Under emergency situations like the current pandemic,  the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizes vaccines for distribution. You can learn more about EUA here.

  • Supply of vaccines may be limited – At first, the supply of the vaccine will be limited, and demand will be exceptionally high. Fortunately, the federal government continues to work with vaccine manufacturers to ramp up production and get the necessary logistics in place in order to immunize large groups of people. Remember, this is a vaccination process unlike any other in history, so it won’t be immediately available at every local doctor’s office, clinic or hospital.

  • Vaccines will be prioritized – Because it will be impossible to vaccinate everyone at the same time, the most vulnerable groups  will get priority . This includes seniors in congregate living settings, frontline workers, hospital personnel, older adults with serious health conditions, and other high-exposure and at-risk groups. Vaccine treatments will become more widely available after these groups receive the shot first.

  • The vaccine will be free – Vaccine doses purchased with U.S. taxpayer dollars will be given to the American people at no cost. However, vaccination providers (such as your local pharmacy) will be able to charge an administration fee for giving the shots.  Vaccine providers can get this fee reimbursed by the vaccine recipient’s public or private insurance company or, for uninsured associates, by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund.

Health and safety comes first at United Methodist Communities

It’s important to be patient during this time and to focus on the fact that a viable, safe vaccine is on its way. The last year has been frightening and frustrating, but we all have it in us to keep going and to stay focused on what really matters. While we wait for our opportunity to get the vaccine, it is important to continue our protective habits – to wear our masks, wash our hands, social distance with those we love, and most importantly, keep checking on the seniors in our local community.

At Bristol Glen, a senior living community in New Jersey, we understand that this is a concerning time for families with vulnerable loved ones. We’re here to help in any way we can, by providing a safe, supportive environment where the health of our residents and associates come first.

Fun Activities for Grandkids Visiting Your CCRC

The holidays are a wonderful time for families to get together for some quality time, but it can be a challenge to keep younger children occupied while they’re visiting their grandparents.

Here are a few ideas for fun activities everyone can enjoy together, from our team at our CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community) in Sussex County, New Jersey:

  • There are so many wonderful books out there for younger children that adults also enjoy, from the “Harry Potter” series to the classics like “Nancy Drew” or “The Gruffalo.” Sitting down together and reading a book is a quiet, but fun way to spend a few hours together.
  • Pajama parties. Snuggle up together on a chilly winter night, eat snacks and watch Christmas movies! Pick a few special treats for the night, like popcorn, homemade cupcakes or pizza, and get ready for a night in.
  • Deck the halls. Decorating your apartment and Christmas tree creates special memories with your grandkids and initiates magical results. There are many little handmade decorations for children who love arts and crafts, and they’ll transform your home with tinsel, lights and more!
  • Many adults have wonderful memories of baking with their grandparents, even if they spent most of their time sneaking cookie dough and dropping flour all over the floor. While it’s a messy event, your grandkids will love the tasty results! For younger grandchildren, you can even pre-bake cookies and set up a decorating station for an easier and more child-friendly day.
  • Lend a helping hand. The festive season is about community and sharing, so introducing your grandkids to how they can help those around them brings the spirit of the holidays to life. There are lots of age-appropriate activities available, from helping make cookie deliveries to older members of your CCRC who don’t have family around, to helping at a local soup kitchen.

When is the Right Time to Move into a CCRC?

Moving out of your home into a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is a big step, but it can be the best decision if you do it at the right time. Here’s some advice from the experts at our CCRC in Sussex County, New Jersey.

What is a CCRC all about?

These are communities managed by an organization that offers a continuum of care for seniors and provide wellness and lifestyle support. These services are only implemented when and if they are required. For example, independent seniors can remain in independent living for as long as possible before making the transition to assisted living.

For many seniors, housing is a priority attraction, as these communities usually offer separate, spacious apartments maintained and managed by the organization. This takes a load off in terms of worrying about a house that has become too big or impractical to manage.

Another central attraction is the services, from social activities and clubs to wellness programs like yoga and aerobics, all on-site and available to all residents who can participate.

CCRCs are not about scheduling or managing the lives of seniors. They’re about taking care of the “work” of life so seniors can spend as much time as possible on their own, independent endeavors. Whether traveling or socializing you’ll have the peace of mind that services possibly needed in future are available.

So, when is the best time to move into a CCRC?

The truth is that it’s probably sooner than you think! The majority seniors who entered this new chapter of their lives reported it was the best decision they made, and that they should have done it sooner. It can seem like an overwhelming decision, but the younger you are, the easier the transition will be — and the more time you’ll have to find a community that perfectly fits.

A Guide to Breast Health and Wellness as We Age

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so our CCRC Sussex County, NJ team decided it’s the ideal time to talk about senior breast health!

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is the result of abnormal, malignant cell growth in breast tissue, and is the second most common cancer affecting women after melanoma. The American Cancer Society estimated that over 231,000 women in the USA alone would be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2015, with 40,290 of those cases proving to be fatal.

The risk of breast cancer in seniors – What you need to know

Several risk factors make it more likely for someone to contract breast cancer, and many of these are especially relevant to seniors. These factors include:

  • Aging
  • Menopause occurring after the age of 50
  • Long-term use of oral contraceptives
  • Post-menopausal weight gain
  • No pregnancy/Pregnancy after age 30
  • Genetic history of breast cancer

Other risk factors to be aware of include adolescent weight gain, radiation exposure to the chest region as a child, start of menarche before age 12, and increased breast tissue density.

Senior health and wellness tips to reduce the risks of breast cancer

As with most cancers, early detection is key to treating and surviving breast cancer, so the best tip we can give you is to keep up with regular screening with your physician. The U.S. Preventative Services recommends that women aged 50 to 74 attend biennial mammography screenings (one every second year) as these can detect the cancer before symptoms start to show.

Clinical breast exams are also recommended at least every three years, and you can perform a self-exam on your own, carefully feeling the breast for any lumps. If any are found, it’s best to see a doctor for a more thorough checkup as soon as possible.

If you are especially high-risk for breast cancer, speak to your physician about a more detailed detection process, as they may recommend more frequent mammograms or MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging).

Other tips for helping to reduce risk factors include:

  • Limit alcohol to recommended intake.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Lose any excess weight.
  • Commit to a healthy diet and exercise plan as recommended by your physician.

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Gives Seniors Their Lives Back

Physical therapy is one of the most beneficial options for seniors who have been ill, had a hospital stay or surgery. Rather than recuperating in bed with a good book or your favorite show, medical professionals recommend that you get up and get moving — under the supervision of our assisted living team in Gloucester County, NJ.

What’s the benefit of physical therapy?

Physical therapy is designed to help:
  • Restore and improve functionality;
  • Restore and improve balance;
  • Restore and improve strength;
  • Reduce pain (for example, for arthritis patients);
  • Speed up the healing process; and
  • Increase mobility.

Why is it important for seniors?

Everyone should undergo rehabilitation and physical therapy after a physical setback or surgery. But, it’s even more important for seniors. As we age, our bodies find it more and more of a challenge to bounce back after an illness or injury. It can be a challenge to achieve the same levels of physical wellness, even years after. Unfortunately, this can lead to risks of further complications down the line, including:

  • Increased fragility;
  • Infections;
  • Balance issues; and
  • Increased fall risks that can result in serious injury.

Physical therapy is incredibly important to give your body the support and assistance it needs to ensure that you can get back that level of confidence and independence you need to live a quality life.

What happens in physical therapy?

Everyone’s physical therapy plan is unique and tailored to what their body needs and can manage, so that it brings the greatest benefit without causing injury. Therefore, it is very important to follow your medical professional’s advice and visit recommended therapists who understand how to work with seniors.

You will work one-on-one with your therapist to ensure that you are doing exercises correctly. They will likely recommend some exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home. Getting the best results from physical therapy means committing to following any regime properly — the success stories speak for themselves!

Seniors and Technology – Staying in Touch and Avoiding Scams

Technology is an increasingly significant part of our lives. Not just for the Millennials — seniors are increasingly adopting technology too. In fact, around 4 in 10 seniors own and use smartphones, one-third use tablets, and 67% regularly go online. Here are great uses for technology, as well as tips on how to stay safe online, from our Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in Sussex County, NJ.

Benefits of technology for seniors

Why are more seniors adopting cutting-edge technologies? Well, there are plenty of benefits. Here’s what the experts say:

  • Staying social. Staying in touch with family and friends is easier than ever before, thanks to text messaging systems, video chat programs, email, and social media. It’s also faster than ever before, with many options to connect you face-to-face instantaneously like Skype and Facetime, no matter how far apart you are geographically. This is a great way to check in with friends, see how the grand-kids are doing and much more, all with the click of a button.
  • And a healthier social life has a significant impact on physical health, too, keeping seniors active and engaged. In fact, according to United Healthcare’s 2012 100@100 survey, it’s just as important as healthy genetics, exercise, and a nutritious diet.
  • Safety. One of the biggest fears of seniors and their loved ones is safety. Thanks to technology, you can send an assistance alert simply by pressing a button on your Personal Emergency Response System (PERS). Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices can also help families and loved ones keep track of seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s, who can easily become disorientated and lost.
  • Medication Management and Health Tracking. As we age, we usually take more and more pills — all of which need to be taken on a specific day, at a certain time and under particular conditions. There are many apps and technologies today that can simplify this process, preventing overdoses and medication mismanagement. Similarly, apps can help seniors meet their physical fitness or nutrition targets and monitor daily health activities. They can also store health records and information on health conditions for easy access.

Staying Safe with Technology

Of course, technology has its own risks and seniors are vulnerable to scams. Simple rules to follow include:

  • Only use apps that are recommended by your healthcare professional or someone you trust;
  • Keep your smartphone or device secure with a password; and
  • Only allow trusted individuals access to your device.

The Best Tips for Healthy Aging

Although it sometimes feels like it, getting old isn’t all about dealing with different health issues – it’s about enjoying your life. Here are the best tips from our CCRC in Sussex County, New Jersey on how to stay in the best shape:

  • It’s never too late to get healthy. Whether you’re a smoker, never participated in a sport or hate your vegetables, getting older doesn’t mean the time to make these changes is past. Even in your 60s and 70s, you can reduce the risks of chronic disease significantly, and that means more time with friends, family and loved ones.
  • Start slow with exercise. Exercise has a massive impact on your health, happiness, and well being, by controlling your body weight, reducing risk of dementia, lowering blood pressure, and strengthening muscles, thereby reducing your risk of falling. It’s advisable to speak first to your doctor about the best exercise for your body, so that you get fit in a healthy way. Exercise can also be a great excuse for socializing and working together with friends to keep you all motivated!
  • Stretch. Stretching is important for preventing stiffness, preventing injuries from exercise, and improving flexibility.  It also helps relieve discomfort resulting from health conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis. Try a yoga class for seniors at your local wellness center or gym, and get in sync with your body.
  • Eat healthier. Changing your diet is a simple way to boost your health, but it does not mean you have to avoid the food you love – providing your doctor approves. Speak to your doctor about ways you can improve your diet, like adding more leafy greens and fresh fruit, and cutting out fatty foods in favor of healthy foods rich in essential fatty acids. This will help lower blood pressure, lower risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer, and give your body a better immune response.
  • Prevention is better than a cure. Preventative measures  keep your body healthy and help stop issues from getting worse, much like servicing a vehicle every year instead of waiting for it to break down. Having your yearly flu shot, cancer screening, and eye examination as well as paying attention to warning signals from your body, are important ways to prevent bigger medical issues.

Medication Safety Tips for Seniors

Medication can be a lifesaver as we grow older and may have to deal with more health problems, but only correctly taken as prescribed by a physician. When multiple medications are in use, it’s easy to get distracted and forget to take one or forget you’ve taken one already and accidentally double dose — and that can be very dangerous. Here are some tips for taking medications safely from our assisted living community in Camden County, New Jersey:

  • Only take prescribed medication. There are plenty of over-the-counter medications and supplements available, but you should avoid taking them unless you have spoken to your doctor or healthcare practitioner. While it may be safe to take them, your doctor will know if you are already on a treatment plan for that health issue, as well as whether or not the over-the-counter medication could interact badly with another medication you are already on.
  • Take medication as prescribed. Taking the correct dosage is just the first step in safely managing your medications. In addition, it’s important to take them at the right time of day, as some medications make you drowsy, and some medications should also only be taken with a meal. These recommendations are in place not only for your safety and health, but to ensure that the medication works as it should.
  • Keep a medication list. Keeping an up-to-date list of your medications is useful when consulting with a healthcare practitioner and during a medical emergency. Keep it somewhere easily seen, like on your fridge, and give a copy to a close friend or family member.
  • Be aware of medication interactions. Medications can interact with many things such as other drugs, herbal supplements, food, or drink.  It’s important to know the possible side effects of a bad medication interaction and carefully read all instructions that come with your medication in order to take them properly. If you are struggling with keeping track, ask a friend or family member to help create an information sheet you can refer to when needed, or organize your medication into a weekly pillbox.

Home Organization Tips For Seniors

Keeping your home well-organized is essential for any stage of life, but it is especially important for seniors. Keeping the home clutter-free and easily navigable is key to a long, healthy and enjoyable life for several reasons: First, falls are the leading cause of non-fatal and fatal injuries for the elderly. Second, recovery becomes more serious and lengthy as we age. Here are some tips from our continuing care retirement community in Sussex County, New Jersey.
  • Raise your storage height: As we age, we lose flexibility and strength, which makes bending down to pick up boxes more difficult and poses an injury risk. Place boxes and stored items no lower than upper-thigh height and keep lower areas clear.
  • Keep important documents together: Sorting through papers can be a mammoth task, but it’s also a very important one. Recycle anything unimportant to get rid of clutter and reduce fire risk. Place passports; insurance policies; wills; powers of attorney; and social security, tax, home and car documents together in designated folders inside a specific cupboard or desk at home.
  • Medication sorting and list: Sort through all medications in the home and remove all that are expired. Make a list of all the medication and dosages your loved one is currently taking and attach it to the fridge along with any important notes. This is very useful for tracking medication and for providing doctors with essential information on your loved one’s medical status. Medication should be sorted in day-of-the-week pill boxes.
  • Remove clutter, add light: It’s easy for clutter to build up in the home, especially if your loved one has lived there for decades. Unfortunately, it presents a very real tripping, health and fire hazard, so it is important to sort through belongings and keep spaces clear. This is especially important in bedrooms, passageways and on stairs. In these spaces, the floor should be kept as clear as possible, carpet should be perfectly flat, and without throw rugs. Additional lighting should be added to ensure visibility and easy around-the-clock navigation. A press-on or bedside light in the bedroom  eliminates the need for seniors to search in the dark for a wall light.

How to choose a continuing care retirement community location

After you have decided that a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) is the right option for you or a senior family member, the next step is to consider the right location. Here are some tips from a leading senior living community in Sussex County.
  • Services and facilities: The community you choose should offer you the best quality of life above everything else – these are your golden years, after all. It’s important to consider if and how they can scale up their services as your needs change. You don’t want meal services to be compulsory if you’re enjoying cooking for yourself and, at the same time, you want to be sure that they can handle your advanced long-term care if it becomes necessary.
  • Homey living arrangements: When looking at these communities, consider how you would like your home to be. One of the factors in making this transition may have been that your family home was too large, so a self-contained, spacious apartment might be just what you’re looking for. Also, make sure that the living area is spacious, well-lit and well maintained. This shows the ability to easily accommodate walkers or wheelchairs if needed and that the community takes pride in keeping the buildings fully functional and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Town or country living: The setting of different CCRCs have their own pros and cons. Country locations may have beautiful scenery, but could leave you feeling isolated and make transport and day trips difficult. Town settings offer additional vibrancy, giving you easy access to shops, restaurants, theatres and parks, allowing you to live an independent and full life.
  • Distance from family: For many people, being close to their family is a must – and it’s certainly something to consider when choosing a CCRC. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to choose a community just down the street. Be sure to consider communities that are slightly further afield, as these may meet your needs better while still making it easy for family and friends to visit.

Choose United Methodist Communities Bristol Glen for independent senior living

United Methodist Communities at Bristol Glen, offers an independent, high quality lifestyle that allows seniors to fully enjoy their golden years. How to choose the right nursing home

For many families, choosing a nursing home is a challenging and emotional task – and with the rising costs of long-term care it is critical to find a facility that is affordable and puts your loved one’s wellbeing first. Here is some advice for finding the right nursing home.
  • Make a budget: The services offered and cost of assisted living and nursing home care varies widely between facilities. Drafting a budget will help determine what facilities should be considered. Don’t forget to research different types of government assistance that may help you afford the facility you prefer.
  • Services required: Nursing homes offer a wide range of services that your loved one may or may not need. Deciding on a general list of essential services will help you narrow down your choice of facility. For example, if your loved one has dementia or the beginnings of dementia, then facilities that offer Alzheimer’s and memory care and support services will be able to care for your loved one properly.
  • Health and safety: The nursing home must comply with strict health and safety regulations but it shouldn’t stop there. Standards should apply to the general wellbeing of their residents. For example, removing or repairing frayed carpets that present a tripping hazard, having sufficient lighting to prevent falls and utilizing a layout that is easy to navigate with walkers and wheelchairs.
  • Quality staff: There should be sufficient staff to manage the number of residents in the nursing home; housekeepers, food service, activities to run events, 24-hour nursing, and security staff. The property should be in good repair and supported to high standards by maintenance and grounds staff.

Our Continuing Care Retirement Communities are designed with safety in mind

At United Methodist Homes (UMH) of New Jersey, we offer all our residents comfortable accommodations that are designed to meet the highest senior safety standards. Complete with 24-hour emergency alert and fire safety systems, accommodations are well lit and easily navigable with a walker or in a wheelchair. Three important differences between assisted living and home care

For most families, a time will come when parents and grandparents will need considerable assistance to manage their daily lives and health concerns. Often, family members can step in and help – but this can quickly become overwhelming for caregivers. Fortunately, there are several care options for seniors, including assisted living or at home health care. Here are some of the differences between these two options:
  1. Cost: At home health care may sound more affordable at first, but do your research. Although the monthly fee may sound extremely high, most people come to view assisted living as a great value. When calculating cost take into account not only the home care expense, but home upkeep expense as well.  Home care cost can escalate quickly as your loved one’s  needs escalate. Assisted living communities, however, are able to scale up their support quickly, easily and affordably – and with minimal disruption to your loved one’s daily life.
  2. Living Environment: While being able to stay in familiar surroundings may appeal to your loved one, their home can be a challenging and dangerous environment – as well as expensive to maintain. Stairs, slippery floors, poor lighting and narrow passages are difficult to navigate with a walker or a wheelchair and increase the risk of falling. Assisted living communities, however, are designed especially to suit the needs of the elderly. These single floor living options include apartments with easy to navigate open floor plansand all the latest safety features installed, including emergency smoke alarm and medical alert systems. They are also maintained by the community, keeping them in perfect condition.
  3. Social interaction: Unfortunately, it is easy for the elderly to become cut off and isolated from social circles, especially when they are no longer able to drive or use public transportation. Home care can help improve this in a limited way by providing transport to friends and family nearby. Assisted living communities take this further, encouraging residents to socialize in their community. Most communities have a diverse calendar of events throughout the year, as well as social clubs, church gatherings and much more. This allows your loved one more control over his or her life, encouraging healthy mental and physical activity.

Tips for avoiding mistakes when searching for an assisted living community

Selecting an assisted living community is a challenging process – after all, it is an important decision which places the care and support of a loved one in the hands of people and organizations we may not be familiar with. Here are some great tips on common mistakes that can easily be made while searching for an assisted living community, helping you to find the ideal community for your needs.
1. Prioritizing your preferences and not those of your elderly loved one: It’s easy to get caught up in your own tastes when looking at a community and become enthusiastic about amenities your parent may not care for. Rather, keep your elderly family member involved in the process as much as possible. If he or she is frail or suffering from memory problems, try and keep in mind what they used to enjoy the most. For example, if your mom loved gardening, try finding a community with lovely gardens that she can sit in and enjoy.
2. Forgetting about future needs: The assisted living community you’re looking at may offer the lively social life and apartment-style living your parent would enjoy, but what about when he or she grows older? Is the apartment easy to navigate with a wheelchair? Can they provide meals? What programs are available to Alzheimer’s or dementia residents? Try to choose a community which offers scalable services so that your loved one isn’t faced with a second, stressful move in the years to come.
3. Not realizing how much care is needed: Here, it’s important to honestly and accurately evaluate your parent’s care needs in order to find a community that can provide the right level of services. Take note of medical conditions and other health issues as well as their level of independence. Will your loved one need bathing assistance? Is he or she able to cook meals? Are they suffering from increased memory problems? Answering questions like these will help make sure your loved one’s comfort, safety and health will be properly managed.
4. Deciding under pressure: This is a stressful time for any family, but rushing into a decision can easily leave your loved one worse off than before, so it’s worth it to take as much time as you need. First, work out your loved one’s priorities and do some Internet searches in the areas which suit you. Then, visit three to five different communities to help get a better idea of what they offer and how they differ. Keep your loved one involved wherever possible and don’t be afraid to go back to any community and ask questions or have a second look around.

Choose assisted living communities that prioritize a high quality of life.

At United Methodist Homes of New Jersey, our assisted living communities are all about keeping seniors as independent as possible while supporting them with services that make their lives easier and more enjoyable. Our programs ensure residents are encouraged to get involved with the community at a level they are comfortable with. We tailor our services to ensure that each resident gets the help and support they require to live a full and happy life. Additionally, we are able to scale these services at any point if they require a higher level of care, including care for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents. What are the differences between Continuing Care Retirement Communities and Assisted Living Communities?

When you are looking for a senior care and living option for yourself or a loved one, you’ll come across two very popular options: namely assisted living communities and Continuing Care Retirement Communities. But what do these options offer residents and how are they different?

A Guide to Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living refers to care and daily living support offered to seniors in a comfortable, residential setting. These support services are tailored to the needs of each resident, giving them access to a wide range of assistance when needed. These services include:

  • Daily living services – Housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, transport, dressing and bathing, as well as meal preparation.
  • Medical care services – Medication assistance, health monitoring, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy as well as 24-hour access to nursing staff.

The living options found at United Methodist Homes of New Jersey assisted living communities are designed for seniors with different needs. All these residences are spacious, stair-free and easily navigable and some have walk-in showers, grab bars and other built in amenities. We offer different levels of assisted living, ranging from minor support to more intensive assistance, and residents upgrade their level of care as they require it.

A Guide to Continuing Care Retirement Communities

These communities are characterized by their strong commitment to helping seniors stay as independent and active as possible, offering a wide range of amenities and social activities right on their residents’ door steps while removing the stress and costs associated with maintaining a house. An additional benefit of CCRCs such as United Methodist Homes Bristol Glen, is the availability of assisted living services if needed. This allows residents to change their level of care as they require it all under one roof.

At United Methodist Homes of New Jersey, our aim is to ensure each of our residents maintain their dignity, quality of life and independence. Our programs encourage residents to get involved with the community at a level they are comfortable with and we tailor our services to make sure each resident gets the help and support they require to live a full and happy life as they age. Top Reasons Why Seniors Choose an Independent Living Lifestyle

For aging adults, the reason behind the choice to move to an independent living community, also known as Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), depends on their current health status and lifestyle requirements. This type of lifestyle is typically desired by aging adults who are relatively healthy and need minimal to no support to complete daily activities. What makes this option so attractive? Here are the reasons we most often hear:

  • Staying active – Most seniors really value having a physically active life and would like to stay mobile for as long as possible. Independent living offers the ideal support for this, firstly through housing which minimizes the risk of falls and injury and secondly, through amenities such as hobby clubs, social gatherings, fitness centers which allow seniors to get active within their community and with peers their own age.
  • Maintaining independence – Independent living communities are designed to keep seniors as independent as possible for as long as possible, allowing you or your loved one to maintain the lifestyle you prefer. In these communities, most of the support is aimed at reducing stress (maintenance, housekeeping, meals and laundry services, among others) in order to give you more time to spend on the pursuits you love.
  • Safety – For many seniors, personal and medical security is understandably important. An independent living community offers both in a way that is highly efficient and unobtrusive. From easily navigable apartments, with smoke detectors and medical alert systems to 24-hour security and on-site home health services, seniors can relax knowing that support is right there when they need it.
  • Scalable services – Moving can be difficult. This is why leading independent living communities offer scalable services which change to accommodate your needs, as required. In some cases, this allows seniors to stay independent and in the comfort of their own apartment throughout their stay in the community. If higher levels of care are required, they can be accessed under the same roof.

Things to Consider When Researching Continuing Care Retirement Communities in NJ

Finding the right Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) or independent living community for your elderly loved one or yourself can seem overwhelming. Understandably the process involves extensive research and knowing the right questions to ask. Many people looking for senior living options just aren’t exactly sure where to start – which is why we’ve developed this list of considerations to help you in your search.

  • Location – When searching for a Continuing Care Retirement Community it is important to take stock of your current lifestyle and determine a suitable environment for your retirement years. For example, if a small town atmosphere surrounded by nature sounds appealing, you should definitely give Bristol Glen a visit.  We are located in the rustic countryside of Sussex County, NJ that sits peacefully on 74 beautiful acres of woodlands and meadows surrounded by mountains, lakes and state parks.
  • Philosophy – One of the biggest concerns for people moving into a Continuing Care Retirement Community is how their freedom and lifestyle will be affected. We also recognize that residents’ needs may change over time. Independent living at Bristol Glen gives residents access to a wide range of care options to be used on an as need basis.
