2022 Guide of Senior Scams to be Aware of

2022 Guide of Senior Scams to be Aware of

Did you know that in 2020, the FBI[1] found that seniors lost almost $1 billion to scams, with 105,000 people over the age of 65 falling victims to crooks? As seniors continue to be targeted by scammers, associates from our independent lifestyle community in Cape May County have taken the time to compile some helpful tips to keep your loved ones safe. But before we dive into their advice, it helps to understand the three most common types of scams to look out for first.

Senior Scam #1: Identity theft. This generally takes 3 forms: pharming (legitimate-looking websites run by scammers that require someone to fill in personal information), phishing (legitimate-looking emails that trick someone into sending personal information), and smishing (text message versions of phishing).

Senior Scam #2: Tech support fraud. Although more seniors are using computers, smartphones, and digital platforms than ever before, there are still seniors who aren’t very tech-savvy. Fake websites and fraudulent contacts can trigger malware downloads or even fake virus and application alerts, often with a message with a contact number to resolve the issue. A scammer on the other end of the line then asks for remote access to their computer to ‘fix’ the problem. In the process, what they really do is steal sensitive data, request payment for their “service,” and then obtain personal credit card information.

Senior Scam #3: Online shopping fraud. Here, a scammer will contact a person to sell them fraudulent, fake, or non-existent products or scare the person by saying they haven’t paid for something and send them an invoice of demand. This has become especially prevalent as eCommerce has taken off more amongst seniors.

Tips to protect seniors from online scams

Luckily, there are some easy ways to help keep your mom or dad safe, or at least lower their risks of falling victim to a scam.

  • First, tell them to never, ever share personal information with anyone over the phone, online, or via email. If they think it is legitimate, they should confirm it with you first. Scammers often make their demands time-sensitive and demanding, but they must never be afraid to wait before they act!
  • Then, set up safeguards on their digital devices. This can include up-to-date antivirus software, VPNs, anti-malware software, pop-up/ad blockers, and 2-factor authentication. You can also ask their permission to be added to their bank account notifications and move larger savings to secure accounts separate from their credit card account.
  • Teach them what to look for in scam messages. This can include how to hover over an email address to see how it’s spelled (usually there are misspellings or odd addresses, like a Gmail account using a bank’s name). They can also look for misspellings in messages, and learn not to open attachments or links in unusual or chain emails.
  • If they are unsure about an email or text message’s legitimacy, ask them to always contact the company directly – not via phone numbers or links on the suspicious message. The company can always let your loved one know if there is really an issue, special offer, or legitimate request.

The Best Vitamins for Seniors

The Best Vitamins for Seniors

The body changes as we age – there’s no getting around it! Here are the most important vitamins and supplements that seniors might need, from our assisted living community in South Jersey. As always, be sure to check with your doctor first before you start taking anything new!

Why do Seniors Often Need Vitamins and Supplements?

Ideally, we’d get all of our necessary vitamins and nutrients from plenty of fresh food in a balanced, nutritious diet, but that’s not always achievable for seniors. In fact, the most common reasons why seniors may need supplements to stay healthy include:

  • Reduced exposure to sunlight, leading to a lack of vitamin D
  • Bones becoming more brittle with age
  • Appetite loss due to medication, illness, or aging
  • Medications flushing out vitamins and minerals before they can be absorbed fully
  • Medical conditions suppressing the body’s immune system or ability to absorb vitamins
  • Not cooking or eating a balanced diet as they age
  • Bodies becoming less efficient at absorbing vitamins due to age

What vitamins do seniors typically need?

Again, always check with your doctor before taking supplements – this will make sure they don’t interfere with medical conditions or medications, and that they are the right ones your loved one needs in the right concentration. With that said, the following supplements are usually at the top of the list:

  • B Vitamins – B12, B6, and B9 vitamins are very important for nerve and blood cell health, as well as supporting brain health. Good sources other than supplements are dairy products, eggs, fish, and leafy greens such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and beans.
  • Calcium – This helps keep bones strong and teeth healthy, and is especially important for older seniors and seniors with bone density conditions. It’s also found in dairy products, dark leafy greens, and calcium-fortified cereals.
  • Vitamin D – Another great supplement for bone health is vitamin D, which also helps reduce risks of diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation. You can also find it in fortified cereals, dairy products, and fatty fish like tuna and salmon. To activate this vitamin, it’s important to expose your skin to gentle morning or afternoon sunlight for an hour or so each day.
  • Magnesium – This mineral is important for nerve and muscle health, as well as supporting the immune system. Magnesium also supports muscle recovery during physical therapy and fosters a healthy heart rhythm. There’s lots of magnesium in whole grains, dark leafy greens, avocados, lentils, and nuts.
  • Potassium – This is a very important supplement because we don’t produce it naturally in our bodies. It supports nerve function, energy levels, brain function, and healthy heart rhythms, and without it we can feel constipated, fatigued, have muscle spasms, and can experience heart palpitations. Good foods with potassium include bananas, avocados, beets, butternut, acorn squash, and apricots.

At UMC at The Shores, a part of the United Methodist Communities network, we offer a welcoming community for seniors of all levels of independence – and we also have a dedicated memory care program for elderly residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia conditions.

We aim to create a warm, active community where seniors get the support that they need to live an abundant life, from well-appointed apartment-style homes and attractive grounds to a vibrant social calendar. Fall is the Time to Make Your Move

Fall is the Time to Make Your Move

Moving your loved one into assisted living can be an emotional and complex process. Choosing the right day or even the right time of year to make the move isn’t easy! If you have the flexibility to choose your date, then fall is the perfect time of year to make the transition. Here’s why, from our beautiful assisted living community in South Jersey.

Why Fall is the Perfect Time of Year to Move into Assisted Living

#1 – Comfortable Weather

The heat of summer is gone, and the weather is comfortably cool, which is perfect for seniors and anyone who is helping them move. Many seniors find it challenging to tolerate heat and humidity, which can cause headaches, dizziness, swelling around the joints, and even confusion – especially if your loved one has a dementia condition. Fall weather is also easier on anyone doing the heavy lifting, making it much more tolerable to get hard work done without the risk of dehydration or heatstroke.

#2 – Transition Season

Fall is a season of change when the rush and energy of spring and summer make way for a gentler, softer atmosphere. It’s naturally the time of year when we prepare for changes ahead, creating the mindset needed for a big move such as this one. And because it’s cool but still an outdoor season, it’s easier for your loved one to get involved in the community’s activities, whether they are social occasions, hobby clubs, or simply sharing a meal with neighbors.

#3 – Avoiding the Rush

Families tend to wait until the end of the year to make the move into assisted living for a number of reasons. From wanting to use the holidays or annual leave as a moving day, wanting their loved one to stay with them through the holidays, or simply thinking it’s best for their loved one to start living in a new place in the new year, there’s usually a rush on assisted living community accommodation through November and December. This is especially common in assisted living communities that offer temporary senior accommodation, where families book their loved one a respite stay while they travel. Moving in during fall means you get to avoid that rush and have a wider range of assisted living choices – although we always recommend that the earlier you look, the better!

#4 – The Holidays are Just Around the Corner

Moving into assisted living in the fall gives your loved one time to adjust to their new community, as well as something to look forward to! Whether you’ll be spending time with them over the holiday season or you’re relying on the community’s fun-filled festive event calendar, there’s just enough time to settle in properly while still having plenty of things to look forward to and build those important social and companionship connections.

At UMC at The Shores, a United Methodist Communities assisted living facility in Cape May County, we take a holistic approach to caregiving that supports a full and independent life in a professional yet compassionate and fun community. We care deeply about each person in our care, balancing the need for strict protocols with our focus on active, healthy aging.

We cater to seniors with a wide range of needs, from those who are quite independent and want a close, companionable, and safe community life to seniors with dementia conditions who need additional care and attention.

National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day

You’re darn tootin’ seniors get their own day! This month on the 21st is National Senior Citizens Day and if you’re 70+, you surely deserve some special recognition. Older adults are irreplaceable to both their families and society because we have so much to learn from them. Their years of experience translate to seasoned wisdom that we can all stop and really take in. At UMC at The Shores, a leading senior living community in South Jersey, we celebrate our residents every day, not just on this special day. If you’re looking for some ways to celebrate, here are a few activities our assisted living team in Cape May County put together to try to make this day extra special for everyone.

#1 – Lunch on the boardwalk

Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful weather with a walk along the boardwalk and a delicious lunch! Many restaurants also offer senior citizen discounts and specials to take advantage of, and there’s so many options to choose from! Whether you like a tangy BBQ, authentic pasta, a classic burger, and shake, or fresh seafood, you’ll be sure to find a spot with great food and an even better view.

#2 – Birding by boat

Our coast is blessed with a bounty of salt marsh wildlife and birds, and the best way to see them is by boat. Take a guided tour and get to know the secretive birdlife and marine life of this ecosystem. Your experienced captain and naturalist on board will be able to teach you all about them.

#3 – Sunset safari

If you’re more of a night owl, then a sunset boat safari is probably more up your alley! You may have seen your bird and marine life by day, but at night it’s a different story. Cruise through the salt marsh behind Cape May and Wildwood as the sun sets, and let experienced naturalists help you spot fascinating wildlife in their natural habitat.

#4 – Whale and dolphin watching

Board the Cape May Whale Watcher with your family and friends for a 3-hour tour of Delaware Bay and the estuary. Get your binoculars and camera ready to spot porpoises, dolphins, manta rays, humpback whales, bald eagles, gannets, and more! It’s a guided tour where you’ll also learn a bit about the seafaring history of the area and the native marine life.

#5 – Lighthouse tour

Not just romantic icons of the past, lighthouses have played an essential role in seafaring safety and history for hundreds of years. New Jersey’s lighthouses are famous for their part in protecting ships and ports through wars and peacetime as they sailed the treacherous Delaware Bay. Now you can see them from the ocean through an interesting historic tour. The best part: lunch and snacks are included too!

#6 – Golf and mini golf

Get out on the green and enjoy a day of golf in the mild weather while it lasts! Whether you’re an avid golfer or simply enjoy putting with the grandkids, Ocean City has the course for you. The Ocean City Golf Course is a 12-hole, 37-par course designed by Leo Frazier and is family-friendly. If this course isn’t your speed, there are several other mini-golf courses you can choose from if you prefer more light-hearted fun.

Celebrate life at our assisted living community in Cape May County

The Shores is an assisted living community in South Jersey that makes a difference! Not only are we located just a stone’s throw away from the golf course, marina, boardwalk shops, and beautiful beaches, but we also have a very different approach to senior living. Summer Fun, Had Me a Blast!

Summer Fun, Had Me a Blast!

Sandy, Danny, and the rest of the gang had it right – but summer fun isn’t just for teenagers! With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect time of year for seniors to unwind, relax, and make memories with each other and their loved ones. Here are some ideas for summer fun for the seniors in your life provided by our assisted living team in South Jersey.

#1 – Sunday Sundaes

Who doesn’t love a cold, sweet treat on a hot summer Sunday? Set up a sundae bar at home or in your assisted living community with a range of ice cream flavors, toppings, and sauces. You can also add a float station for classic soda floats! Whether you love a classic vanilla sundae with a cherry on top of chocolate ice cream covered in hot fudge, there will be something everyone will love.

#2 – Backyard baseball or softball

This can be as simple as making the time for grandpa and the grandkids to play catch on a lazy afternoon or organizing a community event at a park where local seniors can come and watch. It’s a great idea for local clubs who want to create a social event where kids can join in, less mobile seniors can watch and cheer on loved ones, and where everyone can have some classic summer fun. Remember to have lots of refreshments and shade for your supporters.

#3 – Stargazing

Cool summer evenings are best enjoyed outside under the stars. Set up chairs on your patio or even in the park and watch the stars come out. You can also arrange to have a cookout or make s’mores and tell spooky stories, especially if the kids are involved! Another fun idea is to have a local astronomy club set up telescopes so you can see the stars and planets up close while you learn a little about our beautiful galaxy.

#4 – A bake-off

For aspiring young bakers to experienced home cooks and fans of The Great British Baking Show, everyone will love a competitive but fun bake-off! Invite local baking clubs and host it at your assisted living community (and make sure residents can participate). Have team events for kids and grandparents, competitions for best pies and cakes, and fun trophies to hand out to the winners.

#5 – Music in the gardens

At your local park or even assisted living community, you can set up chairs in the gardens and entertain seniors and their families with a little music festival. Invite singers, bands, and music clubs to perform and hand out picnic baskets for everyone to enjoy an afternoon of music outdoors. Remember to have plenty of shade and keep everyone hydrated, especially on hot days.

At UMC at The Shores, an assisted living community in South Jersey, we know how important healthy social connections are to the quality of life. 5 Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day in Assisted Living

https://theshores.umcommunities.org/the-shores/5-ways-to-celebrate-memorial-day-in-assisted-living/

Memorial Day is so much more than a holiday – it’s a time to remember those who have died while serving our country and celebrate what we stand for. Here are some great ideas for celebrating Memorial Day in assisted living with your loved ones, from our assisted living team in South Jersey.

#1 – A moment of silence

At 3 pm local time, it’s traditional that everyone across the USA has a moment of remembrance for those who died in the line of duty. Anyone can join in, and you can have a local musician follow the moment of silence with the traditional Taps bugle call.

#2 – An informal gathering

After the moment of silence, it’s time to share stories, reminisce, and enjoy each other’s company! A casual gathering for residents, staff, and volunteers can be a wonderful way to connect with other veterans in the assisted living community and spend time with friends and family. Tea and coffee with cake and light snacks are the perfect accompaniment to this gathering.

#3 – Stream a Memorial Day parade

Many residents in assisted living won’t be able to attend parades in person, so it’s a great idea to set up a screening space in the restaurant or communal room and live-stream parades from around the country. Usually, there’s a great national broadcast program too, and this can be played on TVs or computers in communal living areas.

#4 – Crafting, games, and themed activities

Leading up to Memorial Day, seniors can get involved in making décor and crafts for the holiday, including remembrance poppies, yellow ribbons, and bunting. As part of the day’s events, you can include a range of activities that are social and easy for all abilities, including games of dominoes and chess, cornhole, beanbag toss, and even croquet. Make sure there are plenty of baked treats and foods to enjoy through the event, like cherry or apple pie, hot dogs, watermelon, and other American classics!

#5 – Invite speakers and veterans from your local community

A good speaker can be a wonderful attraction for seniors in assisted living, so chat with your community to find veterans who would like to do a public speaking event for your assisted living family. You can also have local, younger veterans come and visit your seniors to spend time together and participate in your Memorial Day event. This is a great way to show appreciation to veterans and their families who are in assisted living and your larger community and shows what Memorial Day is really all about.

Senior Communities and Family – Stay Connected

Staying connected to friends and family outside of assisted living is very important for the mental health of seniors. Today that means using the internet, but with one-third of Americans over the age of 65 not confident in using the internet, communication can be a struggle for many families. Here are some tips on keeping in touch and making friends in assisted living, from our community in Cape May County. 	Teach your seniors – The internet is a fantastic communication tool for seniors, so it’s worth it for younger family members to teach senior loved ones how to use it. Try to teach them one tool at a time, starting with very simple apps and platforms that they can easily utilize. For example, if they already use Facebook, teach them how to send texts and make calls through Facebook messenger. If they are confident with texting, teach them how to use WhatsApp. 	Play together – Start family gaming groups based on your loved one’s interests and get everyone involved. We have a race to share our Wordle each morning, but it can be much more than just that! There are so many different apps and games that you can play together from wherever you are, so keep trying till you find one you love. Some good ideas include Minecraft, Words with Friends, Mario Kart, Family Feud, and Ticket to Ride. Playing games is also great for making friends in assisted living, especially for seniors with mobility issues. 	Schedule family calls – Microsoft Teams, Skype, and Zoom aren’t just for work video conferences – they’re great for family catchups too! You can have a set time each week where you all get together on a video chat with your loved one in assisted living. Video calls are especially useful for family and friends who are out of town or living overseas. You can easily schedule them through your email, and an assisted living staff member or nearby family member can help set this up on their computer. 	Have face-to-face time – Today’s seniors do value the internet, but there’s no substitute for one-on-one time with the people they love! Try to see them in person on a regular basis. Whether it’s popping in for a cup of coffee, bringing them groceries and having a quick lunch together, or scheduling a family dinner once a week, every moment is precious. 	Create a family project – There is something special in every family, so why not create a project around it and get your senior loved one involved? This might be collecting family recipes and turning them into a family cookbook, exploring your genealogy and family history, or learning a skill from them. It can be helpful to have an activity to do while spending quality time together. It’s a wonderful way to show them that they have exceptional value to pass on to younger generations, and it also gives people a sense of purpose and something to look forward to doing together. A warm and welcoming assisted living community in Cape May County At UMC at The Shores, an assisted living community in South Jersey, we know how important healthy social connections are to the quality of life. New Year, New Exercises for Seniors!

https://theshores.umcommunities.org/the-shores/new-year-new-exercises-for-seniors/

It’s a new year, which means it’s a new opportunity to get in (and more importantly, stay in) shape! Working out has many physical and mental health benefits – especially for older adults who want to maintain independence and full, abundant life in their senior years. So, what are you waiting for? If you or a loved one is looking for a new workout routine, here are 5 easy exercises for seniors or beginners.

1. Walking – Walking is one of the best physical activities for beginners because it can be modified to your fitness level and ability. Less able seniors can enjoy shorter walks on level paths through a nearby park, and fitter seniors can go on nature walks or walk at a much brisker pace for a longer amount of time. Seniors can walk even if they have a cane or walker, and it can be a fantastic social activity if a friend joins in too.

2. Dancing – Dancing is a great cardiovascular exercise that helps improve bone density, posture, and balance. It’s important to choose a dance genre that’s enjoyable so that it’s an activity you or a loved one can look forward to. Whether it’s line dancing, tango, ballroom, or even Zumba – choosing the right form of dance is sure to keep seniors motivated! Dance is a great way to lift spirits, meet new people, and get the heart pumping.

3. Swimming – It may be cold outside, but swimming indoors is possible all year round! From doing laps to water aerobics, swimming is a healthy aerobic exercise that also improves muscle tone, lung health, and strength. It’s especially good for seniors with aching joints, back pain, or weight issues, as the natural buoyancy of the water takes the strain off your joints.

4. Pilates – Did you know that Pilates was originally invented to help physically rehabilitate soldiers returning from World War I? It’s a series of exercises that are all about strengthening the core muscles in your hips, back, and buttocks. Building muscle strength improves balance, posture, strength, and flexibility, all without putting too much strain on your joints. Today’s Pilates classes also focus on shoulder and arm strength as well as hip, ankle, and wrist flexibility too. Pilates has an impressive impact on physical health and can be adjusted to suit all fitness levels too.

5. Yoga – Yoga can also be modified for all abilities and ages, even for those who are chair-bound. These exercises are slower and gentler than Pilates, and they work to build flexibility, balance, and strength. Besides the physical benefits, the aim of yoga is to soothe and calm the mind, especially if it involves meditation and breathing exercises. Both the physical and mental health benefits of yoga combine to help improve outcomes of seniors with high blood pressure, anxiety, stress, and pain.

Whether you’re interested in setting healthy New Year’s Resolutions or simply want to find a new way to stay fit and meet new people, these exercises for seniors are a great way to do it!

4 DIY Christmas Decorations to Make with Mom and Dad

https://theshores.umcommunities.org/the-shores/4-diy-christmas-decorations-to-make-with-mom-and-dad/

Creating your own holiday decorations is gratifying, and it can be even more fun if you get mom or dad involved. If your senior parent is in an assisted living community, simple holiday crafts can turn their apartment into a place full of Christmas cheer. Plus, they can also gift their homemade decorations to friends and other family members this holiday season. If you’re looking for inspiration, here are four-holiday decorations you can craft with your senior loved one, suggested by our assisted living community in South Jersey.

#1 – Cinnamon and orange-scented tree decorations

These simple crafted decorations add a rustic touch to your Christmas tree – not to mention the beautiful smell they create throughout your home! All you need to do is:

  • A few oranges that have been sliced into round discs and dried in the oven on low heat for a few hours
  • Cinnamon sticks around 4 inches in length
  • A thick wool needle
  • Thin twine or golden thread

Poke the needle through the cinnamon stick to make a hole for the thread to pass through. Pass the thread and needle through the cinnamon stick and then the orange slice behind it. Tie off the thread, making a loop that you can use to attach the decoration to the tree. To make it even prettier, you can sprinkle it with gold dust or add a little acorn or berries onto the thread.

 #2 – Photo ornaments

This is a great way to add memories to the tree! Using a polaroid camera or even just your smartphone, take photos of all your loved ones wearing their Christmas gear or playing with Christmas props. Have them developed into 3×3 prints and then create some inexpensive lightweight backing for each picture using thick cardboard or wood. Make sure to put a hole in the center of the top of each piece of backing. Glue on the photos and decorate to your liking with holly, glitter, or other crafting supplies. Thread some gold or red thread through the hole and tie it off so you can hang it on the tree.

#3 – Mason jar candle holders

Mason jars make the most beautiful candle holders! All you need are:

  • Your mason jars
  • Candles to fit (you can use battery-operated candles for additional safety)
  • Crafting glue
  • Holiday decorations of your choice (some examples: pinecones, glitter, and poinsettia flowers)

Some beautiful ideas include making small wreaths of pine boughs around the mason jars, dipping the jar in white glitter and adding a nose and eyes to make a snowman, or creating a wreath of tiny pinecones and poinsettia flowers around the base. Remember not to put any décor inside the jar itself unless you are using a battery-operated candle and never leave a real flame burning unattended.

#4 – Christmas candy containers

For many people, having candy for guests is a Christmas tradition. Rather than using the same containers as you do throughout the year, you can make special Christmas-themed ones. Visit your local craft store with your loved one and buy some basic containers – jars or even solidly constructed cardboard containers – along with craft glue, glitter, and Christmas accessories. You can also use craft paper to cut out your snowflakes or Santas and look around your neighborhood for pinecones and pine boughs.

These holiday crafts for seniors are a fun opportunity to get the whole family together to make some festive containers that show off everyone’s Christmas goodies, including candy canes, chocolates, and more!

Autumn Activities for Seniors in South Jersey

https://theshores.umcommunities.org/the-shores/autumn-activities-for-seniors-in-south-jersey/

We’re nearing the end of fall, which means it’s time to take advantage of signature autumn activities like pumpkin and apple picking before it’s too late! If you’re looking for a fun autumn activity to do with your senior loved one in South Jersey, look no further. Our assisted living team at UMC at The Shores has put together a list of fall activities for seniors that are local to the area.

#1 – Events at the Physick Estate

Sponsored by the Cape May MAC (Museum+Arts+Culture), the Physick Estate hosts a range of family-friendly events through the fall that is great fun for all ages. This includes craft and collectible shows, a Sherlock Holmes Weekend, a Ghosts of Christmas Past trolley tour, holiday lights trolley rides, and much more.

#2 – Pumpkin picking and farm fun

Enjoy the last of the fall harvest and go pumpkin picking before the snow sets in. There are plenty of places to go all over Cape May County, and lots of activities too, like corn mazes, hayrides, craft stands, and food trucks. We recommend the Legates Farm Market, Lehner Farm & Nurseries, Leslie C Rea Farms, and Secluded Acres Farms.

#3 – Pet an alpaca

Another great day trip before the cold weather sets in is a visit to Jersey Shore Alpacas, a beautiful alpaca farm in Green Creek. These fluffy friends are a treat for the whole family, and you can even go on a little fence line feeding tour or a private tour of the farm! The farm also has a quaint country store filled with goodies, including beautifully soft and warm alpaca wool capes, shawls, scarves, and socks.

#4 – Birding and beautiful fall foliage

Take a tour of the New Jersey fall foliage, get some fresh air, and see the sights before it gets too chilly to be out. Pack a picnic and travel through Belleplain State Forest (stopping at the beautiful Lake Nummy) and Cape May Point State Park. We especially love exploring Cape May Point State Park’s World War 2 military base. The Park is full of interesting history and natural beauty. Your family may even see incredible bird migrations of hawks, loons, gannets, and geese, as they take off for warmer climates.

#5 – Apple picking on the farm

Picking delicious apples is great fun for the whole family, and Cape May County is one of the best places to do it! Farms like the Allen Family Farm, Stiles Farm and Nursery, Parson’s Farm, Fifer Orchards, and Blades Orchard are great spots for the whole family. Many places offer food and drink (so you can warm yourself with a nice mug of apple cider!), picnic spots, delis, and other farm activities to enjoy… and you can always follow it up with a day of making apple jam, apple pie, and desserts together from your hand-picked bounty!

The Shores is a beautiful, full-service senior community offering assisted living in South Jersey. Our team is passionate about helping seniors live full and rewarding lives in a safe and welcoming environment. How to Make Friends in Assisted Living

https://theshores.umcommunities.org/the-shores/how-to-make-friends-in-assisted-living/

Socialization and maintaining friendships positively impact seniors in so many ways. Staying connected to others around you improves your state of mental health by boosting self-esteem and decreasing feelings of isolation and depression. Being social also improves your physical health. More social people are reported to have fewer colds, lower blood pressure, and a stronger immune system. Keeping that in mind, we know that making friends as a senior moving into a new place can be intimidating. If you or a loved one has just moved into an assisted living community and are not sure where to start, check out our tips on making new friends, from our assisted living team in Cape May County.

#1 – Get involved

Like a swimming pool, it’s best to take a deep breath and dive right into community life. If you’re unsure of how to get involved or what your options are, start by looking at the social calendar. This will have details about events going on, clubs you can join, and outings that are planned over the next few months. While it’s a great idea to start with activities you enjoy, remember that moving to an assisted living community creates the perfect opportunity to try something a little different, so don’t be afraid to think outside your comfort zone and look at a new skill or develop a new interest.

#2 – Bring along a friend or loved one

Feeling nervous about all the new faces? Bring someone familiar along with you! Most communities love to have friends and family participate, and you can talk to the associates on-site about having a loved one come along for a social event or a meal. This will help you gain confidence and not feel intimidated, as well as give you someone to talk to. It’s a good idea to choose a loved one or friend that’s quite social and extroverted too, as they can help you break the ice more easily, start conversations, and introduce you to other residents.

#3 – Socialize at meals

Even if your apartment has its own kitchen, try to eat in the communal dining room as often as you can. Not only is this convenient when it comes to mealtimes, but it will also help you meet new people. Meals are a great time for bonding and sharing, creating an easy and relaxed source of conversation, whether it’s about your favorite foods or family recipes, or memories you’ve shared over meals with loved ones. Welcome other residents to your table, sit with someone who is eating alone, or even share a wave and a smile when you walk in, and you’ll start learning names and faces in no time at all.

#4 – Take it easy on yourself

Making friends isn’t always easy or quick, so be patient with yourself and others, and take it slow. Start with small, simple steps each day – lunch in the dining room, joining a session for the book club, or even just asking your neighbor over for coffee. Don’t be afraid to ask the caregivers for a little help or have a friend come help you break the ice, and before you know it, you’ll be fitting right in!

At The Shores, we know that a healthy and happy community is the best recipe for your golden years. With a lively social calendar, a wide range of clubs, and outings scheduled each month, we love bringing people together and seeing our residents thrive. What is Palliative Care? How Does it Work?

https://umcommunities.org/hospice/what-is-palliative-care-how-does-it-work/

If you’ve been advised that your loved one needs palliative care, you may be wondering what exactly palliative care is, and how it will benefit your loved one. Our hospice care team in South Jersey has put together this helpful guide to answer some basic questions about palliative care, and we hope it will help you make the best decision for your loved one and your family.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is a specific type of medical care for people of all ages who are seriously ill with life-threatening, curable, or chronic illnesses. The primary goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life by relieving pain and suffering.

Is palliative care the same thing as hospice care?

Not necessarily. Hospice care is for people diagnosed with terminal illnesses who don’t have long left to live, while palliative care is for all types of illnesses, including curable ones. Hospice care is palliative in the sense that its goal is to make the person as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

What’s the difference between a palliative doctor and a primary care doctor?

A primary care doctor will focus on overall health and treating diseases and illnesses. Palliative care doctors are focused on eliminating the person’s pain and suffering as much as possible, while also helping the ill person and their family cope with their illness.

If my loved one receives palliative care, will they still have access to their primary care doctor?

Yes, absolutely. Palliative care doctors and primary care doctors work together to ensure the person’s treatment is as comprehensive as possible. If your loved one enters palliative care, both their primary care doctor and their palliative care specialist will work in conjunction to create the optimal treatment plan for them.

How can I find the best palliative care for my loved one?

We recommend asking your loved one’s primary care doctor as a first point of inquiry. Certain hospitals and assisted living communities have palliative care specialists, and there are also medical teams who provide palliative care in the home.

Does insurance cover palliative care?

Coverage varies by state and insurance companies, of course,  but  many private insurance companies and HMOs include certain palliative care benefits. Medicare and Medicaid also have provisions for palliative care, so we recommend checking with your loved one’s insurance provider to learn what they’ll cover.

Ideas for Father’s Day in Assisted Living

https://umcommunities.org/blog/ideas-for-fathers-day-in-assisted-living/

As Father’s Day approaches, our South Jersey assisted living teams are preparing to help our residents and their families celebrate the fathers in their lives. This is the most ideal time of year to celebrate – the weather is warm, the skies are sunny and the flowers are in full bloom. There’s really no time like the present to get together with loved ones and acknowledge the important role that our fathers play in our families.

Here are some of our favorite ways to celebrate Father’s Day in assisted living:

Take dad out for a day of activities he enjoys. Whether it’s a walk through your local park, dinner at his favorite place, a game of golf, or something else you know he’ll enjoy, a change of scenery can be fun for your father and can help him feel more revitalized.

Plan a family BBQ. If weather permits and you live locally, a BBQ is a great way to commemorate Father’s Day while getting the whole family together. You can let your dad plan the menu and even give him a crack at the grill. A day to bond with family outdoors will be fun and memorable for him.

Create a family photo album for dad. Ask everyone in your family to select a few photos of themselves to include in the album. We recommend choosing some serious shots, as well as some funny ones. Don’t forget to include pets – they’re family too! This gift is irreplaceable, and something dad can look back whenever he likes.

Bring him a meal from his favorite restaurant. Mobility and health issues prevent some fathers from being able to leave their assisted living community. If that’s the case for your dad, why not bring the food to him? Call and ask what special treat he would like for Father’s Day, and order enough for the whole family to enjoy.

Plan a day of games. Games are a great way to bring your family together, and most assisted living communities have common areas you can utilize for this purpose. If dad loves the casino, bring a deck of playing cards or Left-Center-Right dice. For a fun change of pace, try out a game like Family Feud or Heads Up for some good belly-laughs.

Make a surprise visit. Perhaps, not all of your family members live close to your father’s assisted living community. If that’s the case, a surprise visit would really be something special. We recommend calling the community ahead of time to ensure the associates on-site can keep your arrival a surprise from dad!

Celebrating special dads in assisted living

At The Shores, UMC’s assisted living community in Cape May County, we are happy to work with you to plan something special for your dad. Many of our residents are fathers and we encourage the family to visit if possible.

We understand that mobility and health issues prevent some of our residents from being able to leave The Shores to celebrate their special day, so please get in touch and let us know how we can best accommodate your plans. We have communal spaces where families can gather and spend time with their fathers, a dining area where you can enjoy delicious meals together, and many other ways to make Father’s Day truly special.

When Eyes Become Old, Kindle a New Way of Reading

https://umcommunities.org/assisted-living/when-eyes-become-old-kindle-a-new-way-of-reading/

Whether curled up by the fireplace in the winter or relaxing poolside in the summer, millions of people read books everyday. Reading keeps our minds active and allows us to learn more about the world around us.

But as we age, loss of vision and other sight impairments often interfere with the ability to read easily and comfortably. Therefore making a once-loved hobby, difficult and inaccessible.

Luckily, for seniors with sight impairments, there has been a tremendous rise in e-readers like the Amazon Kindle and Kobo Forma, both of which allow users to enlarge the text to a custom size that works for them. Kindles and Formas also provide optimum background light, so it’s easy on the eyes.

E-readers are great for those with mild to moderate vision impairment who often struggle to read the pages of a traditional book. Once connected to the internet, users have access to vast libraries of e-books from around the world!

Audiobooks are also incredibly popular among those with sight impairments, and many audiobook apps like Audible and Homer Player can be used with a smartphone or a computer. Even those without vision impairments love audiobooks because of the convenience, and because it’s great fun to listen to the voice actors bring the book to life.

Audiobooks are sometimes narrated by celebrities, and here are five of our favorites:

  1. Brother & Sister, written and narrated by Diane Keaton. This memoir from the famous actress explores her relationship with her younger brother, and reflects on the different paths they took in life.
  2. My Name is Lucy Barton, written by Elizabeth Strout and narrated by actress Laura Linney. This best-selling novel details the complicated relationship between a woman and her mother, and was also performed as a play several years back.
  3. The Dharma Bums, written by Jack Kerouac and narrated by actor Ethan Hawke. Kerouac, one of the most popular Beat Generation writers, chronicles his relationship with another young writer as they travel across the country searching for happiness, the meaning of life, and everything in between.
  4. Year of the Monkey, written and narrated by Patti Smith. The award-winning author recounts a transformative year of her life in this memoir.
  5. Uncommon Type, written and narrated by Tom Hanks. The legendary actor reads his wonderful short story collection.

Enjoying reading in assisted living

At UMC at The Shores, we believe assisted living residents should be able to continue to pursue and enjoy their hobbies to the best of their ability. Whether it’s reading, sewing, music, or something else, our assisted living community is designed to fully support residents when they can no longer (or choose not to) live at home.

Many people in assisted living continue to enjoy their interests. When it comes to reading, audiobooks and e-readers have made reading more accessible to older adults with vision impairment and other accessibility issues. This advanced technology allows our residents to continue appreciating the things they love, while our associates are happily on stand-by to assist with any technological issues when needed.

How to Manage Your Loved One’s Care While Socially Distant

https://theshores.umcommunities.org/the-shores/how-to-manage-your-loved-ones-care-while-socially-distant/

Staying away from mom and dad is tough, but you want to prioritize their health, safety and care while the pandemic continues. Living far away from your folks can also add to the challenge of caring for them. Now might be a great time to consider in-home care or assisted living options nearby to ensure their care is properly managed at all times.

Here are some tips from our assisted living team in Cape May County, NJ, to best manage your parent’s care from a distance.

#1 – Stay in touch

One of the biggest challenges during this pandemic is maintaining our mental and physical health. It’s essential that loved ones stay in touch with their senior loved ones, whatever way they can. Fortunately, with video chat options like Zoom and Skype, it’s easy to chat and see each other as often as you’d like completely risk-free.

For anyone without access to a smartphone or tablet, regular phone calls are just as good. Regular catch-ups or even a quick call once a day to check in are ideal – and they’ll help you cope with your concern for them too.

#2 – Drive by

It sounds like a funny idea, but a quick drive by when you are in the area is a great way to check on your loved one! Let them know by phone when to expect you, and drive by their home at the appointed time.

Stay physically distant, wave, blow kisses and tell them you love them. Sanitize any care packages thoroughly, and place them by the door for pick up while your loved one is inside. People have gotten so creative with this option, organizing funny parades with music and noisemakers, having socially-distant drive-by birthday parties, and just having a great time!

#3 – Create a network

It takes a village to look after senior loved ones, and the pandemic has really highlighted this! Don’t try to take it all on alone, especially if you live far away from your parents. Have a Zoom or Skype chat with other family members (especially those nearby), get to know your parent’s neighbors and even get some professional help if needed.

Having an organized network to share the load is beneficial to everyone, especially your parents. Neighbors can keep an eye on the house and let you know if they have any concerns, family members can take different days of the week to call your parents or deliver groceries/medications, and together you can make caregiving a lot easier and more effective.

#4 – Have a plan

No one wants to face an emergency, but it’s important for their wellbeing and your peace of mind that everyone knows what to do if one does. Whether it’s a fall, a possible COVID-19 exposure or anything else, you and your parents need to have a set plan in place to cope with it.

This should include contact numbers for doctors or healthcare professionals, knowledge of the symptoms of COVID-19 (especially important ones like shortness of breath or chest pain), and having an emergency healthcare kit at home complete with other important contact numbers, health information, insurance details and an updated list of medications. This will ensure that health care emergencies are taken care of as quickly and effectively as possible, and that the right people are contacted to keep you informed.

#5 – Consider assisted living

Going into assisted living is a big step for families and it is often a difficult decision to make, especially during an on-going pandemic. However, these communities are often very different from what everyone imagines! United Methodist Communities at The Shores is a safe community that supports senior health and independence in true comfort.

Our team responded quickly to COVID-19 with industry-leading health and safety protocols for residents, associates, vendors, and visitors to follow. We also understand that responding to this virus is much more than just enhanced health and safety measures. It’s also important to keep our residents engaged and connected to the outside world through means of socially distant activities and video streaming services.

At The Shores, our aim is to create a community where quality of life for seniors comes first – really, we’re working to create a home. Contact us today to find out more about our senior care services, or visit our website at: https://theshores.umcommunities.org/services/
