Why You Need a Daily Routine as You Get Older

Almost all of us follow some daily routine. Whether we’re aware of it or not, routines give our lives structure and stability, positively impacting our mental health. However, as we enter our retirement years, our long-held routines suddenly change as we no longer have to go to work every day. This change can be exciting at first, there is this newfound freedom to do whatever you want! Alas, as the dust settles – the freedom can quickly turn into monotony.

If you’re worried about you’re retired parents feeling aimless or gradually lacking purpose, we encourage you to help them create and maintain a daily routine. Let’s take a closer look at the why:

Daily Routines Reduce Stress And Anxiety For Seniors

When you wake up in the morning and don’t have a plan for days on end, it can make anyone feel restless, aimless, and worried. Seniors report experiencing feelings of anxiousness and depression at alarmingly high rates, and not having a daily routine can significantly magnify these feelings.

Sit down with your parents and help them create a daily routine, including important things like medication reminders, meal times, and bedtime rituals, which ideally should be around the same time every day. They’ll soon see that having structure reduces any feelings of stress and anxiety, providing a sense of daily purpose.

Schedules Increase Feelings Of Safety And Security In Older Adults

Aging causes unique changes in our minds and bodies. Many older adults will experience some changes to their cognitive and physical abilities. These changes can result in seniors feeling unsafe because it’s as if they can no longer trust themselves.

A daily routine gives your senior parent something to trust, a secure timeline t – Breakfast at 8am, morning chair yoga at 8:30am, getting dressed for the day by 9am, etc. The routine will stay the same regardless of other circumstances that may be out of their control, and you can modify their daily routine if their health or abilities change over the years.

Following A Routine Improves Sleep Patterns In Seniors

It helps to  encourage your senior parents to do certain things at the same time every day, such as waking up at 7am and going to sleep at 8pm. Older adults often report sleeping less as they age, however, sleep is vital for a healthy immune system, mental clarity, and overall health and well-being. Although it can be tempting to stay up later when you’re retired and don’t have to get up for work in the morning, adhering to the same bedtime every night can help you form a habit that encourages you to fall asleep easier and stay asleep throughout the night. We all feel better when we’re well rested, which is especially true for seniors, so the sooner you help your older parent create their daily routine, the sooner they’ll be able to improve their sleeping habits.

If you have any questions about establishing a daily routine for your senior parents or would like to know more about how a senior living community can enhance their quality of life, please visit our website at: https://umcommunities.org.

One Last Summer Getaway! But Who’s Watching Mom at Home?

We’re nearing the tail end of the summer, which means it’s your last chance to soak up the sun and plan a little getaway with your family. If you’re a caregiver to your senior parent, then you deserve this vacation more than anyone else! Caregiving is not for the faint of heart, and your mental health suffers if you don’t take enough self-care breaks. While it’s normal to worry about who will look after your senior loved one while you’re gone, don’t let this stop you from taking a much-needed break. The best way to look out for someone else is to ensure your needs are met first. One of our UMC HomeWorks in-home caregivers can help with this by providing respite care for your loved one in their own home. Here’s how:

Understanding In-Home Respite Care

In-home respite care is a service designed to provide temporary relief and support to seniors who require assistance with daily activities. It offers a flexible and personalized approach that allows seniors to continue living in the comfort of their own homes, while receiving the care they need. This type of care is especially beneficial for those who may have mobility challenges, chronic conditions, or require daily assistance with personal care like bathing and getting dressed for the day.

Compassionate and Skilled Caregivers

United Methodist Communities HomeWorks is renowned for our team of highly trained and compassionate caregivers who are dedicated to ensuring the well-being of their clients. These caregivers are carefully selected, screened, and matched with seniors based on their unique needs and preferences. They provide practical assistance, emotional support, and companionship – which can truly benefit the mental health of seniors who live at home with limited options to get out and make connections.

Personalized Services

One of the key advantages of HomeWorks is our commitment to providing personalized services. Whether a senior needs assistance with medication reminders, light housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation to appointments, or just someone to keep them company, HomeWorks tailorscare plans to meet each client’s expectations. By customizing our services, we ensure seniors have everything they need to enhance their quality of life.

Flexible Scheduling

Seniors and their families can choose the hours and frequency of care, depending on their unique circumstances. At a minimum, our in-home companions can provide 2 hours of respite care a day. We can increase this to up to 24 hours if needed. This flexibility allows for adjusting care plans as needs change over time, providing peace of mind to both seniors and their loved ones.

Companionship and Social Interaction

Loneliness and isolation can harm an older adult’s overall well-being. Here at UMC, we recognize the importance of companionship and social interaction, so our caregivers provide practical assistance and also take the time to engage each senior in meaningful conversations and activities. Whether it’s playing games, going for walks, or simply enjoying a cup of tea and a friendly chat, these moments of connection are what truly matter to every senior in our care.

Peace of Mind for NJ Seniors Living at Home

In-home respite care is not only beneficial for seniors but also provides much-needed relief for their families. It offers family members the opportunity to take breaks, attend to personal matters, or simply recharge, knowing that their loved ones are in capable and caring hands. This support system ensures that both seniors and their families can enjoy a better quality of life.

UMC HomeWorks in New Jersey is an invaluable resource for seniors who wish to age gracefully and comfortably in their own homes. Choosing at-home respite care with us can truly make a positive difference in the lives of seniors, enabling them to maintain their independence for as long as possible. How to Boost Mental Health in Seniors

Growing older comes with many unique challenges. As our society has started paying more attention to mental health, and as we’ve grappled with the social and emotional impacts of the pandemic, it has shed more light on the fact that many seniors struggle with this. It’s normal to worry about our parents’ well-being and mental state as they age, so if you’re interested in boosting your loved one’s mental health, there are several approaches to take.

Seniors age experience many changes to their daily routine during this phase of their lives. Many older adults spent years going to work, socializing with colleagues, spending time with friends, and traveling. However, as they ease into retirement and beyond, they often find their days emptier, and along with that can come feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Coupled with the fact that we tend to gradually lose our mobility as we age, all of these changes can have a negative impact on a senior’s state of mind. Fortunately, our Life Enrichment Team Specialists (LETS) in NJ have compiled three concrete ways to boost your older loved one’s mental health.

Get Physical

Staying active is important for all of us, especially older adults. Did you know that tripping and falling is one of the biggest health risks for seniors? As we age, it’s normal to have difficulties with balance, coordination, and mobility, meaning seniors are at an increased risk of falling.

Being active comes in many forms, so it’s important to understand your loved one’s abilities and not to push them too hard. August is a great time of year to take daily walks early in the morning, do some light stretching, or check out what group fitness classes are available at the local gym. Many gyms have classes tailored to seniors, and it’s also a great way for your loved one to meet peers in their area.

Stay Connected With Friends

We all lead busy lives, which means we can very easily lose touch with our close circle of friends. Time, distance, family, jobs and other things tend to get in the way, and before you know it, it’s been six months since you’ve spoken with your closest friend! For those who are recently retired or for seniors with decades of retirement under their belt, pending more time around the house and losing touch with their social circle can cause feelings of loneliness and isolation, which can lead to depression.

However, let’s turn this negative into a positive. One benefit of being retired is that your loved one now has more time to invest in friendships, and technology makes it easier than ever to stay in touch. Whether it’s a weekly Zoom call with their close group of friends, emails to family members who live far away, or even a regularly-scheduled phone call, there are plenty of ways to stay connected with the important people in their life.

Follow A Daily Routine

We are all creatures of habit and thrive when a routine is in place. Transitioning from having structured days to the less structured world of retirement can take a toll on their mental stability. We recommend creating a daily routine for your senior loved one, including important things like medication reminders, and ensuring they’re eating well-rounded meals and going to sleep around the same time every day. Having a sense of structure helps put the mind at ease and mitigates feelings of aimlessness.

If you have any questions about how to boost your older loved one’s mental health by transitioning them to a thriving senior community in New Jersey, please visit our website at: https://umcommunities.org.

Move it or Lose it Before Summer’s Over!

After being cooped up in the house most of the winter, too many seniors may have gotten comfortable with a more sedentary lifestyle. We’re here to tell you to MOVE YOUR BUTT! It’s time to get up, get out, get your blood flowing and the salty fresh air into your lungs!

If you live at UMC at The Shores of course, you will have more than the usual motivation to get outside. Our residents are only a few blocks from the Ocean City boardwalk, where the beautiful views of the ocean will beckon you. Here’s just a few places to walk to from our independent senior living community in South Jersey that should provide more than ample motivation to move.

  1. The beach and boardwalk! Just four blocks from UMC at the Shores, you’ll have the sand between your toes and the ocean waves crashing right in front of you. Waking up early and taking a morning walk to the beach is not only physically good for you, but mentally as well. If you’re not a morning person, an evening stroll on the beach is just as magical.
  2. Walk to get breakfast at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House! This iconic breakfast spot is only a ten minute walk from the Shores! Whether you love eggs, whole grain pancakes or a fresh bowl of fruit, Uncle Bill’s has it all. We love this idea because you break-up the exercise with a nice meal. Plus, walking after a meal helps aid in digestion. So, this one is a win-win!
  3. Stainton Wildlife Refuge is also just a ten minute walk from UMC at the Shores. However, depending on your physical activity level, you might want us to arrange transportation options instead and save the walking for when you’re on the grounds. This wildlife refuge has shore views and is home to many different species. It’s a great opportunity to soak up the scenery and learn more about the local wildlife!
  4. Ocean City Golf Course is right outside your door if you’re a Shores resident! While many people skip the walking when it comes to golf, we are here to tell you that you do have the option to walk to each hole!
  5. Aquatic & Fitness Center. A fitness buff’s dream. Just an 11 minute walk from UMC at the Shores or a two minute drive, The Aquatic & Fitness Center offers “a 25-meter pool, strength and cardiovascular equipment training space, an exercise studio for aerobics, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, and martial arts, indoor cycling, personal training, and racquetball court.” Oh my!

An active life for seniors in Cape May County

As you can see, if you’re a UMC Shores resident you don’t have an excuse to lay around. You do however have a lot of options right outside your door to lead an active life. That’s not counting the community itself which provides multiple daily activities and special fitness classes, outings and social opportunities. Memory Care Matters

Our memories become treasured links to our past, shaping our thoughts and providing a sense of continuity to our lives. For seniors facing memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, these precious connections can slowly fade away. The challenges presented by memory loss demand specialized care and support, making memory care an essential aspect of senior living. In this blog, we will explore the significance of memory care for seniors and highlight how a specialized program, like the Tapestries memory care neighborhood in Pitman, can significantly improve the quality of life for older adults.

Understanding the Challenges of Memory Loss

Memory disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s and dementia, can greatly impact seniors’ cognitive abilities and memory retention. Seniors facing these conditions often experience difficulties with daily activities, recognizing loved ones, and maintaining a sense of time and place. These challenges not only affect their well-being but also place strain on their families and caregivers.

Specialized Memory Care and Support

Memory care programs, like UMC at Pitman’s Tapestries neighborhood, offer specialized services designed to address the unique needs of seniors with cognitive impairment and memory disorders. These communities provide a safe and structured environment where residents receive personalized care, opportunities to strengthen cognition, and a community filled with supportive people. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of memory care in our full-service assisted living community in Gloucester County.

Personalized Approach to Care. Whether your loved one resides in our assisted living wing or our memory care neighborhood, we take the time to get to know each resident on a personal level. Taking into account specific needs, preferences, and interests, we provide care that makes sense to that person. We understand that an older adult who is fairly mobile and prefers time throughout the day to read their novel will not require the same level of care as someone with a memory condition who likes to talk to each person they pass with their walker. By understanding each resident’s background, abilities, and interests, our highly trained staff members tailor their care to provide a supportive and engaging environment for every single resident.

Therapeutic Engagement. Engaging activities and therapies play a crucial role in memory care. Tapestries employs evidence-based practices that stimulate cognitive function, memory recall, and social interaction. These activities may include art therapy, music therapy, and brain games to enhance overall cognitive abilities and mood while also reducing anxiety.

Safety and Security. Our memory care community consists of dementia-safe apartments, including secure entrances and exits, grab bars, and no kitchens. The environment prevents  wandering and falls, both common behaviors among individuals with memory disorders. Residents can move freely within a safe and monitored space, promoting independence and socialization while minimizing the risks of harmful situations.

Medication Management. We understand the complexities of medication management for seniors with memory disorders, especially if there are multiple prescriptions to keep track of throughout the day. Tapestries has dedicated caregivers who ensure residents receive their prescribed medications accurately and on time, providing much-needed peace of mind.

Emotional Support. Living with memory loss can be emotionally challenging for seniors and their families. Whenever possible, all of our on-site team members create a nurturing space where residents can express their feelings and receive the care and understanding they need. Our associates also provide emotional support and mindset counseling to the families of seniors with memory loss. It takes a village! And we’re happy to be a part of you and your loved one’s village here at Pitman.

The specialized care and support provided by communities like ours in Pitman, NJ, empower individuals to maintain their dignity, independence, and cognitive abilities. 4 Ways to Spread Kindness to Seniors in Assisted Living

The last week of August is Be Kind to Humankind Week, and in today’s fast-paced world, acts of kindness hold immeasurable value. Morgan Freeman had it right when he said, “How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.” While there are many different ways to commemorate this week, we will focus on how to put a smile on a senior’s face in assisted living. Here at UMC at Collingswood, we recognize how important spreading kindness is to our residents and welcome those willing to volunteer at our community with open arms.

#1. Engage in Meaningful Conversations

A genuine conversation can change the trajectory of someone’s whole day. Ask the seniors in your life (or at our senior community in Camden County) about their proudest moment, an interesting life story, or what their favorite hobby is to engage in a meaningful discussion. Show them that you are actively listening by asking follow-up questions. Sharing their wisdom, experiences, and memories, makes seniors feel more valued and connected to the world around them. These conversations, as simple as they may seem, create a sense of purpose and foster a deep sense of fulfillment for both our residents and volunteers.

#2. Enjoy Recreational Activities Together

UMC at Collingswood offers a variety of recreational activities to take part in. Whether it’s a game night, arts and crafts session, or a movie marathon, offer to accompany an older adult to an organized activity in their community. Engaging seniors in these activities not only provides entertainment, but also promotes social interaction and improves their mood!

#3. Share Skills and Talents

What’s your secret talent? Could you knit like nobody’s business? Share your expertise with the residents of UMC at Collingswood! You can speak to one of our activity coordinators on-site to hold a class or workshop on a subject you are passionate about. Some classes that our Collingswood seniors can’t get enough of are knitting, painting, and gardening. These activities empower seniors to learn new skills, stay mentally active, and discover hidden talents. Moreover, they bridge the gap between different generations, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.

#4. Assist with Daily Tasks

Performing small acts of kindness through daily tasks can make all the difference for seniors in assisted living. Volunteers can offer assistance with tasks such as unloading groceries, writing letters, or accompanying residents on walks. Helping with technology, like setting up video calls with loved ones, is a much-appreciated gesture because it can combat feelings of isolation and sadness that are all too familiar with lonely seniors.

Volunteer for a Lively Senior Community in Camden County

United Methodist Communities at Collingswood is a place where kindness is at the core of everything we do. Any chance we have to spread kindness to the seniors in our care, we take it. We LOVE welcoming new faces to our community to help foster this mission. Take the opportunity to volunteer at UMC and see just how much joy and positivity you’ll bring to someone else’s life – as well as your own.

Memory Care 101

When you first notice that mom or dad’s forgetfulness extends beyond the occasional ‘senior moment,’ it can be scary.  It’s normal to have many questions and to be unsure of what to do first. ‘How fast will this disorder progress? Do I need special help or can I take care of mom by myself?’ While everyone is different, and disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s can proceed slowly, it is always better to arm yourself with knowledge and make a plan sooner rather than later.

Becoming a caregiver for a loved one with a memory disorder can be challenging and takes an enormous emotional and physical toll on everyone involved. While you may feel this responsibility rests on your shoulders, your job is really to make sure your loved one is getting the best care possible – even if it’s from someone else. A memory care neighborhood, like Tapestries at United Methodist Communities at Bristol Glen is specifically designed for seniors with memory issues. Keep reading below for a list of what sets our Tapestries Memory Care neighborhood apart..

  1. Compassionate and specialized care. Our residents have ‘round the clock support from specially trained members of the UMC team who ensure their needs are met and supported at all times. Our teammates are trained in the latest dementia treatments and practices. We call this group of dedicated employees Life Enrichment Team Specialists (LETS). LETS build a strong relationship with each resident, getting to know their medical needs, personal preferences, and also just who they are as a person. This allows us to more easily anticipate their wants and needs and provide the highest quality of care. Our Tapestries care model allows our residents to live a self-directed life, meaning we do not require them to stick to any type of universal schedule. LETS focus on each resident’s strengths and provides daily activities for them to engage in, both physically and mentally.
  2. Customized environment. UMC designed our Tapestries Memory Care neighborhoods to be “home-like” and comfortable. Each resident gets their own one-bedroom, dementia-safe apartment and has access to secured common areas (both indoors and outdoors) that allow for plenty of private time, as well as socialization.
  3. Family support. We know how mentally, emotionally, and physically taxing this process can be for everyone involved. That’s why, as part of our mission to help seniors live an abundant life, we also want to help their families. We do this by offering spiritual support, family resources, and virtual and in-person support groups. We believe one positive thought each morning can change the course of your whole day, and implementing this strategy every day takes work and perseverance. Our team can help you with this by reinforcing positive affirmations and validating your feelings and concerns about your loved one with dementia.

Tapestries Memory Care Neighborhood

Tapestries Memory Care at Bristol Glen offers more than your average memory care program. With a core mission to enhance abundant living for every senior, our hand-picked team and home-like environment work together to continuously provide exceptional care for people with dementia and their loved ones. We work hard to set the standard for what memory care should be.

3 Reasons Why Chair Yoga is a Great Exercise for Seniors

Staying active and mobile as we age is important for the overall state of our health, as well as our independence! If your senior parent isn’t as active as they used to be, and you’re worried about them moving from point A to point B, chair yoga could be the solution! It’s a safe and effective way for them to get some gentle stretching in and preserve their mobility level. They’ll also enjoy the many benefits that yoga offers people of all ages. Let’s take a closer look:

Chair Yoga Is safe For Seniors Because:

  1. Added stability due to being seated. Many older adults struggle with balance and stability as they age, and falling poses a huge health risk to seniors. While some seniors can participate in standard yoga classes after some practice, many older adults feel more comfortable and secure starting off with chair yoga. Many gyms, community centers, and independent senior living communities offer chair yoga classes for people of all abilities, so check locally to see what’s available. It might even become an activity you and Mom can enjoy together!
  2. It can be done at home. If your senior loved one isn’t quite comfortable going to a gym for a class, many wonderful chair yoga videos are available online, including this one. Chair yoga can be done from the comfort of home and you don’t need any extra equipment, making it a convenient workout for older adults who have mobility or transportation limitations or who don’t have access to a local gym.
  3. You can customize and change the workouts as you progress. As with everything, start with the basics targeted toward beginners. It’s never wise to jump into something at an intermediate or an advanced level;  it’s safest that seniors start with beginner movements and then “up” the routine as they feel more comfortable.

The Added Benefits Of Yoga For Seniors

Chair yoga provides so many benefits for seniors, including:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved muscle strength
  • Improved coordination and balance
  • Reduced stress
  • Better sleep
  • Reduced pain and discomfort
  • Better combating anxiety and depression

It’s normal for us to lose flexibility as we age, and for our balance and coordination to take a dip. Chair yoga is a great way for seniors to work on maintaining these things, while also benefitting from all the positive aspects yoga offers.

Chair Yoga For Seniors At Home Or In Assisted Living

If you have aging parents, you know convincing them to try new things can be difficult sometimes. Many people hear the word yoga and envision people standing on their heads and doing painful-looking backbends, but yoga is for people of all ages and abilities. Chair yoga, in particular, is just one variation geared toward people who have certain physical limitations.

Our senior living team in New Jersey recommends starting with a chair yoga session with your senior parent at home so they can see that it’s safe, secure, and, most importantly, effective. Doing a chair yoga session once or twice a week at home or in their assisted living apartment is enough for your loved one to feel all the benefits, and it will hopefully form an enjoyable habit that will last long into the future.

If you need support with your aging parents and have any questions about our senior communities in NJ, please visit our website at: https://umcommunities.org.

A Senior’s Guide to Getting Rid of Swollen Ankles

Are you concerned because you’ve noticed your senior parent has swollen ankles more often than not? Swollen ankles in older adults are common, but unfortunately, it can be dangerous. This condition not only causes discomfort and a feeling of heaviness, but can also limit mobility and increase risk of falling.

Taking care of our physical health as we age is essential. It helps us maintain mobility, keeps us active, and  improves our overall well-being. If you notice that your older parent has swollen ankles, it’s important to understand the cause, then help them make the necessary lifestyle changes to reduce and prevent future swelling.

Causes of swollen ankles in older adults

When someone’s legs, ankles, or feet retain fluid, it results in swollen ankles. The medical term for this is edema – it’s fairly common in seniors, and there are several underlying factors, including:

  • A sedentary or inactive lifestyle. It’s typical to become less active as we age, but a completely sedentary lifestyle can harm one’s health.
  • Vascular conditions that affect the body’s circulatory system.
  • Chronic kidney disease.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Congestive heart failure.
  • During the healing phase after surgery, when a person is mostly immobile.

Before making any lifestyle changes to address your loved one’s swollen ankles, it’s important to speak with their doctor so you can understand what is causing the edema. In many cases, the cause will determine which lifestyle changes are appropriate because there is no one-size-fits-all cure.

Lifestyle changes that can reduce swelling in the ankles

Stay hydrated. Is your parent drinking enough water every day? Ensure they get enough fluids by setting digital reminders or giving them a large water bottle to refill throughout the day. Dehydration is a major reason why the body retains excess fluid.

Check that their shoes aren’t too tight. Although your loved one may insist that their shoes fit properly, it’s always a good idea to double check. Shoes that are too tight can affect their circulation.

Be more active. Sitting around all day can cause fluid to gather in the feet and ankles, so to prevent this, we recommend daily walks and other forms of exercise compatible with your loved one’s mobility.

Wear compression socks or stockings. You can buy these at most pharmacies, but check with your senior parent’s doctor first for their recommendation.

Keep their legs elevated when sitting down. Using a comfortable ottoman or footstool that they can use to prop their legs up is a good way to keep fluid from gathering in the ankles.

Eat more magnesium. Whether it’s a supplement taken daily or via magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, whole grains, legumes, and seeds, increasing magnesium intake can help prevent water retention in the body.

Simple home exercises for swollen ankles

Your senior parent doesn’t need to visit a gym or even leave the house to do these simple exercises:

  • Single knee to chest – Lie down on the back and slowly bend one knee, bringing it up towards the chest while keeping the other leg flat. Alternate bringing each knee to the chest one at a time for 10 repetitions on each side.
  • Butt squeezes – This exercise can be done lying down or sitting upright in a chair. Squeeze and tense the glute muscles as hard as you can, then slowly release. Be sure not to hold your breath and continue breathing normally. Aim for three sets of 10 repetitions.
  • Ankle pumps – Lie down on your back and elevate your feet. Point the toes up towards the head then down in the opposite direction, using only your ankles to make the full movement. Try to do 20 repetitions daily.

What’s the Difference Between Assisted Living, Long-Term Care, and Hospice?

We can view assisted living, long-term care, and hospice can be thought of as three separate stages or phases of care for seniors. At our senior living community in beautiful Ocean City, New Jersey, we provide apartments and services for older adults who want a medically and socially secure community in their retirement years. UMC provides something known as the “Continuum of Care” for these residents. Many residents come to us fully independent, wanting to experience the social benefits of living in a community setting with their peers. As time goes on, mobility levels and medical needs change, and residents may need more help. At UMC at The Shores, they can progress along the continuum and receive the services and assistance they need, while remaining in the beautiful senior community they call home.

You may start out enjoying the independent lifestyle available at The Shores. You’ll not only have a beautiful apartment minutes away from New Jersey’s best beach for families, but you have access to all that The Shores offers, including meals, entertainment, plenty of opportunities for socializing, and any help you may need with activities of daily living (ADLs). Your rent includes much of these extra amenities, and if you need further assistance, you will only ever pay for services you need. Let’s take a closer look at our base assisted living model for more independent seniors and how that could escalate to long-term care and hospice if needed.

The Assisted Living Model

As time goes on, many residents find their need for assistance with ADLs increases. You may have a recently diagnosed medical condition, or require monitoring or an extra helping hand due to memory loss or mobility issues. This is an easy fix when you reside at UMC the Shores. Since you’re already a member of the UMC Family living at The Shores, , all we have to do is increase your care level as appropriate. This increase could include more daily check-ins with our caregivers or customized physical therapy sessions on-site with one of our dedicated therapists.

Long Term Care

At many non-UMC assisted living communities, you will unfortunately find they have little or no ability to deal with medically frail residents or those with multiple, complex medical conditions. When residents at other communities reach this stage, they are forced to transfer to different, dedicated long-term care or nursing facilities, regardless of how long they’ve been living at their assisted living community. This does not happen at United Methodist Communities at The Shores. Our long-term care program in Cape May County consists of around the clock care that includes nurses, medical management, and customized care services.

Residents that qualify for our long term care program typically have serious, late-stage chronic conditions or a rapidly changing health status. Some of the more common conditions include post-operative wounds, stroke, injuries, diabetes, infections, Alzheimer’s, cardio-vascular ailments, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and respiratory ailments.

Hospice Care

At UMC at The Shores, our Bridges hospice program is designed to bring comfort to not only the residents, but also their family members. Last Minute Summer Activities for Seniors

Summer always comes and goes so quickly, but there is still time for a last hurrah! In fact, August can be the best time to visit the beach if you haven’t already this summer. The weather cools down a bit, and the water warms up – you just can’t beat that combination! If you’re looking to have some last-minute summer fun before the season’s over, check out our list of fun activities for seniors in Gloucester County.

Visit Local Parks and Gardens

Gloucester County boasts several beautiful parks and gardens perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. Sites like the James G. Atkinson Memorial Park, Scotland Run Park, and Red Bank Battlefield Park offer picturesque views, well-maintained walking trails, and serene natural settings. Did you know that Red Bank Battlefield Park was the location of the Battle of Red Bank in the American Revolutionary War in 1777? These local parks provide an ideal opportunity for seniors to reconnect with nature, engage in light exercise, explore history, and even meet up with some friends!

Attend Outdoor Concerts and Festivals

Summer is synonymous with live music and outdoor festivals. Check out the event calendars of local venues, community centers, and performing arts organizations to discover upcoming shows and performances. For one, the Riverwinds Street Fest is back for summer 2023 in West Deptford! All concerts from June 9th to August 18th are held in the RiverWinds outdoor amphitheater at 7pm (weather permitting). The shows are a great opportunity to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, immerse yourself in the music, and spend quality time with friends and family.

Explore Historic Sites

Gloucester County is rich in history, and summer offers the perfect opportunity to explore its heritage. Visit historical landmarks like the Gloucester County Historical Society Museum, the Whitall House, or the Indian King Tavern Museum. These places offer guided tours, interactive exhibits, and a chance to learn about the county’s fascinating past.

Take a Day Trip to the Jersey Shore

Our independent lifestyle community in Pitman is conveniently located about an hour from the Jersey Shore, providing easy access to beautiful beaches and coastal towns. Spend a day relaxing on the sandy shores, enjoy a refreshing swim in the ocean, or indulge in delicious seafood at one of the many coastal restaurants. We might be biased, but we’ll always recommend Ocean City, NJ – home of one of our sister communities, UMC at The Shores, and continually voted the best beach for families! Don’t forget to get a soft-serve cone or some saltwater taffy on the boardwalk! That’s a must in our book.

Exercising and Staying Cool in this Summer Heat

There’s being cool, and there’s staying cool – and it turns out they are two very separate things! If you have been plopping down near the AC and aren’t getting your exercise in, we are talking to you! We know it’s been a very hot and humid summer, so experts at our independent senior living community in Sussex County put together this list of tips on staying cool this summer while you get your workout in!

First and foremost, we always recommend speaking to your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program. Even if a program is marketed towards seniors or beginners, we urge you to confirm with your doctor. Once the doctor gives you the green light, we suggest the following precautions.

  1. Stay hydrated. It’s common for seniors to feel less thirsty as they age, so it’s essential to drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Drink water before, during, and after your workout, as well as throughout the day. It helps if you make drinking water a part of your routine, like when you first wake up in the morning and with each meal. In the summer months especially, we urge you not to leave the house without your trusty water bottle!
  2. Avoid exercising between 10am-2pm when the sun is strongest. We recommend exercising shortly after you wake up, the earlier the better! It’s less humid and hot from 5am to about 8am. If you’re not a morning person, we suggest exercising in the evening when the sun is starting to go down, as the humidity will go down with it.
  3. Stay in the shade. If you choose to exercise outside, we recommend staying in the shade. Try taking an easy walking path through a wooded area or a shaded park. Staying in the shade as much as possible is a best practice for seniors whether exercising or relaxing outdoors.
  4. Break up your exercise. If you normally take a thirty minute walk, you could break it up into three 10 minute walks or even two 15 minute walks so you don’t overexert yourself in the heat.  Research shows that short bursts of exercise spread throughout the day are just as effective as longer sessions.
  5. Use the buddy system. Exercise is safer and more enjoyable with a friend! If you’re heading out for a walk in the woods, bringing someone along with you is highly recommended.
  6. Water exercises. Most gyms, or activity centers offer water aerobics, which is a great way to beat the summer heat! If you’re not interested in a group class, swimming in itself is a great workout.
  7. Protect your skin from the sun. You should be using sunscreen anytime you’ll be out in the sun for extended periods. Don’t forget to re-apply, especially after swimming or working up a good sweat.. We also recommend wearing protective clothing like a large sunhat and sunglasses.
  8. Eat some ice cream. That’s right, it’s a tasty treat that will help keep you cool in the summer heat! If you’re a Bristol Glen resident, you know downtown Newton is just a five- minute drive away and has a few great options for ice cream. Our favorite is Hayek’s Market!

Heat Illness Symptoms to Know

As a final precaution to summer sun safety, we recommend being aware of symptoms related to heat induced illnesses so you know what to look for. The following symptoms can be a cause for concern. If you are experiencing any of these, get yourself indoors to a cool location and contact a medical professional immediately. The symptoms include, but are not limited to: headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps or pains, clammy pale skin, or hot and dry skin, heavy sweating, and a fast or weak pulse.

Sun Safety at UMC at Bristol Glen

Any senior resident at Bristol Glen can tell you there are numerous local walking paths and hikes that are shaded – which make for great spots to get your exercise in! Additionally, our associates understand how harmful the summer sun can be to seniors who are not properly protected. That’s why they take extra precautions with our assisted living residents during these hot weather months, especially when there are a lot of fun outdoor activities planned!
