How to find a home health aide you can trust

Hiring caregivers from home health agencies can be a daunting task – after all, you’re putting the health, safety and happiness of your loved one into the hands of someone you don’t know. Fortunately, there are ways to find a senior home care services provider you can trust, and who will be a positive and helpful supporter of your loved one’s wellbeing and quality of life. Here are some tips from our HomeWorks senior home care services program in New Jersey.
  • Assess your loved one’s needs: Different home health aide agenciesprovide different services, so the best first step is to decide what your loved one really needs. If he or she needs light assistance around the home, but may need more qualified assistance at a later stage, choose a provider that scales their services to meet the changing needs of their senior clients. If your loved one has dementia or Alzheimer’s, make sure that their caregivers are experienced in this area and offer specific services and support to ensure the best quality of life.
  • Agencies over individuals: Home health aide agencies are the easiest way to find reputable caregivers, as they will ensure their aides have the right skills to take care of your loved one. They will also have access to a wider range of qualified caregivers, which is important should your loved one’s care needs change or escalate over the years.
  • Reputation: Senior home care services that have been operating in your area for a long time have a reputation you can research to help you make this important decision. In addition to speaking to caregivers and staff, take the time to talk to the families of seniors who are using or have used their services to get a accurate idea of what they offer.
  • Experience and training: Caring for the elderly is not a straightforward job, it’s a vocation that requires training, compassion, patience and skills. Ask about the training and experience your loved one’s caregiver will have, especially if he or she needs specific medical, nursing or therapeutic assistance.

When a cure is no longer possible

In a world where death is a fact of life, conversations around passing on are still incredibly difficult to have — and yet, it is so important to ensure the proper services are in place to support, care and comfort  each and every person during this time. Our hospice program, Bridges, at our Jersey Shore community is here to deliver just that.
When is hospice care the right choice?
No one wants their loved one to go into hospice care before it’s necessary. So it’s important to arrange medical care and assisted living services, which can be increased as the patient’s needs change. However, once a cure is no longer possible, hospice is there to seamlessly take over.
In order to access hospice care, two physicians (one of whom can be a hospice physician) must agree that the patient’s treatment has to change to a focus on end-of-life care. The process can then begin, determining a customized care and support plan that best prioritizes the patient’s specific needs and requests.
What is included in hospice services?
As with our assisted living services, Bridges is focused on quality of life and are customized to suit each individual. They include:
  • 24-hour carefrom certified caregivers
  • Medication management
  • Personalized care plan
  • Family and spiritual support
In addition, Bridges offers patients private one-bedroom comfortably furnished apartments, including linens, WiFi and more. A customized dining program will be developed for your loved one and food will be available 24/7 in the family room.

Home healthcare: Supporting the social side of senior living

When most people think about in-home senior care, they envision trained caregivers assisting with scheduling medication, managing the home and providing personal services that assist the elderly in day-to-day living. While true, it’s missing a very significant component – supplying companionship, one-on-one interaction and keeping your loved one social, having fun and enjoying life. Here’s some insight from our senior independent home care specialists.
  • Daily companionship: In addition to being fully trained and experienced caregivers, in-home senior care specialists are dedicated companions and friends. Residents are matched with caregivers with whom they get along well in order to alleviate the stress of inviting new persons into their homes. From conversation and board games to providing transport to social events, caregivers support the social side of life.
  • In-Home Respite Care Services: Using respite services can support and strengthen your ability to be a caregiver. Seeking respite services is not only normal, but oftentimes essential to a caregiver’s health. United Methodist Communities offers in-home adult respite care services to seniors in various central NJ locations.
  • Pastoral care: This spiritual support service is offered to seniors who would enjoy and benefit from holistic care. Our chaplains assist with clients’ spiritual needs  offering professional guidance and compassion, as well as partnering with local pastors in providing community support and companionship.

Celebrating the holidays with seniors in assisted living

The festive season is a time for sharing joy and love with family and friends, but it can be more difficult for those with loved ones in assisted living. Here are some tips for including your loved one during this busy holiday period, from assisted living specialists in Gloucester County, NJ.
  • Spending time at the assisted living community: Many assisted living communities really get into the spirit of the season with festive decorations and events, so why not join in? Get in touch, find out what’s happening and pick an event that suits you and your loved one. It will be fun and family friendly, and the best part is no hassle having to clean up after or travelling too far with a senior!
  • Deck the halls: If your loved one has his or her own apartment or room then a day of decorating is great fun for the whole family! Play some carols, put up a tree, decorate it and spend quality time together – what could be more festive?
  • Local events: Travelling far with an elderly loved one can be a challenge, especially if they are very frail or have certain health conditions, so why not look locally? This makes the trip far easier and less stressful for everyone involved. Check out the town’s website and event calendar to find something that your loved one and family will enjoy, and plan a special day out together.
  • Mini-Christmas: Big celebrations can be chaotic as well as fun, and your elderly loved one can easily get lost in the crowd. An intimate mini-Christmas dinner together with all their favorite foods and just close family means quality time together and less time working hard in the kitchen.

How to make a disability-friendly space

As our loved ones age, their homes can become less easy to live in. While this doesn’t mean a move is on the cards quite yet, there’s a lot family and caregivers can do to help make a space more senior and disability friendly. Here are some tips from assisted living specialists in Monmouth County, NJ.
  1. De-clutter throughout the house: Stacks of old newspapers or magazines, too much and oversized-furniture and other clutter pose immediate hazards for the elderly. Keeping rooms, staircases and hallways tidy and as open as possible will give your loved one space to move freely, even with a walker and prevent collisions, as well as injuries from falling items.
  2. Install good lighting – and lots of it: While failing eyesight could be a part of getting older, making your loved one’s home brighter is important for preventing falls – especially in hallways and on staircases. Nightlights installed by the bed quickly and easily light a bedroom without having to get up first in the dark.
  3. Remove or repair all tripping hazards: Loose rugs, slippery floors, electrical cables on the floor and damaged floorboards can easily result in a fall. You can either repair the item or remove it from the home and replace it with something secure and safe to walk on.
  4. Handrails in the bathroom and on stairs: Getting up quickly, walking down stairs or moving while wet can result in falls even when you are there to assist your loved one. Installing handrails or grab bars strategically in bathrooms and on stairs helps your loved one keep their balance.
  5. Install non-slip mats in bathrooms and kitchens: In addition to grab bars, placing non-slip mats in bathtubs and showers gives your loved one extra grip when bathing. This also applies to kitchen floors and tiled/smooth-surfaced outdoor areas that can get wet.
  6. Get clothing fitted correctly: You may think that your loved one’s home is all that needs fall-proofing, but trousers and skirts that are too long also pose a serious tripping hazard. Check the soles of your loved one’s shoes for wear that can reduce their grip. If your loved one likes wearing socks indoors, buy non-slip socks with grips on the bottom.

Choosing between senior independent home care and assisted living

When the time comes that your elderly loved one can no longer live independently, or you can no longer manage their care on your own, it’s time to talk about different professional senior independent home care options. Fortunately, there are some very high quality solutions, including in-home senior care and assisted living. So, what are the benefits of these options and how do you find the one best suited to your loved one’s needs?
  • Moving out of home: Unlike assisted living, senior home care services don’t require your loved one to move out of their home, which can be stressful. Often, moving into an assisted living facility is a good choice if it means moving closer to family and into a senior-friendly space. However, if their current home is convenient for you and can be modified to meet their needs, in-home care is a great choice.
  • Quality of care: When choosing an assisted living facility, you should visit the community, speak to the various teams and get an understanding of daily life there. In-home care means that the professionals come to you, which can be more difficult to evaluate. For your peace-of-mind, we recommend that you visit with the in-home care team and find out their experience and qualifications, scope of services and how they will work in your loved one’s home. Some organizations, like United Methodist Communities, offer both – giving you a chance to evaluate each option thoroughly.
  • Flexibility of care: This is vital in both assisted living and in-home care options, as it scales according to your loved one’s needs as well as yours (if you are a family caregiver). As this can differ between organizations, it’s best to address this with each service provider. At United Methodist Communities (UMC), we believe that continuity and structure is important, so our team of in-home care specialists work with you to develop a custom treatment and assistance plan that meets all your loved one’s needs, even as they change.
  • Companionship: In assisted living, residents benefit from the companionship of other seniors as well as the staff, while senior home care services provide a more one-to-one form of companionship with caregivers. The preferred option depends upon your situation, as each offers considerable benefits. In addition to companionship and healthcare, UMC also offers pastoral care for seniors who want it. Spiritual support is part of our commitment to meet our clients’ needs in holistic and compassionate ways.

5 winter healthcare tips for seniors

Staying healthy during the winter can be a challenge for seniors, but there are easy ways to stay on track through these icy months. Here are some great tips from caregivers at our assisted living facility in New Jersey.
  1. Eat healthily: It may be more difficult to get outside and exercise, but that doesn’t mean your diet should suffer too. Try to choose frozen vegetables over canned, and eat plenty of winter fruits and vegetables like cranberries, citrus and pomegranates. Try to also include fish, poultry and eggs in your diet as well for healthy, lean protein and plenty of zinc.
  2. Take your vitamins: Vitamins are best absorbed through your diet, but it can be challenging to get the right amounts through the winter to keep your immune system healthy. Vitamins C and D and fish oils are all good supplements.
  3. Take precautions exercising outdoors: If you are relatively fit and your healthcare specialist gives the go-ahead, there’s no reason why you can’t continue exercising outdoors – but take smart precautions. Wear the proper footwear to prevent slips and falls, follow the weather forecast, take warm clothing and don’t forget your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses to protect you from UV rays and the wind.
  4. Stay in touch: Over the winter months it can be easy to withdraw and become isolated, as it is difficult to get out and socialize with other people in poor weather. This can lead to loneliness and even depression, a serious condition in the elderly. Watch out for these symptoms in your loved ones and in your community, and remember that help is just a phone call away. You can also arrange a check-in system with family and friends in the neighborhood.
  5. Stay warm safely: It’s important to have a professional service all heating equipment and systems to ensure that they are in safe working order. Keep heaters away from curtains and other fire hazards, and make sure that there are working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors installed on each floor.

When is the right time to look for at-home care for the elderly?

Senior home health care services are a great option for elderly loved ones who still live independently, but are starting to need help for basic, day-to-day tasks. Here are some indicators that your loved one can benefit from in-home assistance from New Jersey’s specialists in home care for the elderly.
  1. Trouble driving: The ability to drive safely is an important part of being independent, but may deteriorate as we age. If your loved one is no longer feeling confident behind the wheel, anxious about driving or has had a minor accident, they may benefit from an in-home care service that takes care of their transportation needs.
  2. Home maintenance: If your previously house-proud parents are now letting home cleaning and maintenance issues get out of control, in-home care might be a good idea. This lack of daily cleaning and maintenance may mean that your parents just aren’t able to keep up with the constant demands of their home. With some assistance, they can continue to enjoy their home, while also removing potential safety and health hazards.
  3. Loss of weight and poor hygiene: Caring for ourselves becomes more difficult as we age and this often includes bathing, traveling to the supermarket, cooking and cleaning. If you’re noticing that your elderly loved one is experiencing unusual weight loss or poor hygiene, in-home care offers a great option. These services prioritize your loved one’s health and comfort and avoid the stress of moving.
  4. Confusion and forgetfulness: Everyone forgets things sometimes, but if you’re noticing this more frequently, it could be a good time to talk about getting in-home care. As possible symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s, it’s important to consult a physician for a proper medical diagnosis and treatment plan. Your in-home care assistant can then help with daily tasks, medication management, transport and more.
  5. Depression, anxiety and mood swings: Unusual changes in mood or high levels of stress can signal that your loved one isn’t coping at home. This can be a very difficult reality for anyone to deal with, but it’s important to recognize, seek and implement a solution that suits your loved one. Often, seniors feel anxious about their inability to cope and possibly giving up their homes and their independence. In-home care can be the right choice.
Compassionate, expert senior health care services in the comfort of home
United Methodist Communities in New Jersey understands the challenges of providing care and companionship to seniors while encouraging a full and independent life, which is why we’ve developed our HomeWorks program.
Through this program, trained and experienced staff assist seniors and their families through comprehensive in-home care. Each care plan is designed around the client’s needs, filling in with necessary assistance while allowing your loved one to remain in the comfort of their home.
In addition to assistance with daily tasks, transportation and personal hygiene, our team can give support with nursing, medication management and much more. For dementia and Alzheimer’s clients, we can develop specific care routines to ensure a sense of structure and help reduce stress and anxiety.

Travelling with your elderly loved ones this Thanksgiving holiday

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with family, but this may mean travelling with an elderly loved one, which can make your trip more challenging. Here are some tips from caregivers at one of our senior and assisted living communities in New Jersey on making this an easy and enjoyable time for everyone.
  • Plan ahead: Having a set itinerary for your trip will allow you and your loved one peace-of-mind. Know exactly what time you have to leave to the airport or get on the road to get to your destination – and be sure to plan to arrive early, as this gives you some extra time to deal with any unforeseen delays.
  • Flying: Airlines are happy to accommodate elderly passengers but be sure to take time to find out how best to travel with your loved one. Speak to the airline in advance to organize assistance through TSA checkpoints, secure a wheelchair (a good option even if your loved one is fairly mobile), oxygen (if needed), and a seat that is suited to elderly or disabled passengers. Some airlines even offer discounted tickets for seniors.
  • Medication: Keep all medications separately in a single freezer bag along with a list of their names and instructions for use. This is helpful for families who are unused to managing medications as well as doctors, in the event that medical assistance is needed. If you are flying, you will have to keep these stored in transparent 3-ounce. containers for security purposes. Be sure to check out the medical facilities closest to your destination.
  • Light schedule: Busy days filled with events are often stressful and tiring for the elderly, so make sure to either keep a very light schedule of events or ensure that your loved one can have plenty of supervised recovery time while you and other family members are out.
  • Relax and enjoy: Travelling can be stressful for anyone, regardless of your age, so take time to relax and enjoy your trip. It’s important to make the most of these events together, but that doesn’t mean taking on everything yourself. Spread the load between family members and friends, and remember to spend quality time simply enjoying each other’s company.

Is it time for hospice?

Choosing hospice care for yourself or  your loved one can be a daunting and emotional decision. For many residents, their focus is on staying out of hospice care until their last few weeks or days of life, when in reality, hospice care can be greatly beneficial to patients and their families many months before this. Here is some advice from experienced caregivers at our hospice in Cape May County on knowing the right time to move into end-of-life care.

A good rule to follow is that hospice is most beneficial to patients and their loved ones in the last six months of life. Once treatment options are exhausted, care turns from defeating medical conditions to ensuring holistic comfort, compassionate assistance and the best possible quality of life. In order to qualify for this care, physicians must agree that no further medical treatment can assistresident and that the resident has a prognosis of six months or less. They can then recommend hospice care and the resident can move in to an end-of-life care facility.

Other indications that show hospice care is needed include residents suffering from life-limiting illnesses, progressive weight loss, increased or uncontrolled pain, decline in ability to perform daily tasks, frequent infections and hospitalizations, increased weakness, withdrawal and poor nutritional status.
While hospice care can seem like a difficult decision, it is important to remember that the focus is on making you or your loved one as comfortable as possible and delivering the highest quality of care during this time..

Seniors and diabetes

November 14 is World Diabetes Day, and with more than 25% of Americans over the age of 65 living with this disease, the specialist caregivers at our senior and assisted living community in New Jersey would like to raise awareness and share advice on this condition.
What is Type 2 diabetes and what causes it?
As we age, our risk of developing Type 2 or adult onset diabetes, increases. Also known as hyperglycemia, it occurs when the body fails to make or use insulin properly, causing low sugar levels in cells and high sugar levels in the blood. Other risk factors include being overweight and unfit, as higher levels of body fat make it more difficult for the body to process insulin properly.
While anyone can develop diabetes, a family history of the disease can make your chances of contracting it higher. In addition, African Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans also have a higher occurrence of Type 2 diabetes.
What are the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes?
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • An increase in appetite
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Constantly having the need to urinate
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness in the hands and feet
If you or your loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice as soon as possible. This is because, untreated, this disease can lead to heart disease, vision problems and blindness, kidney conditions, nerve damage, dental issues, infections, amputations of limbs, and even death. A simple blood test will confirm a diagnosis and, if you do have Type 2 diabetes, treatment can begin to help improve your quality of life.
What is the treatment for type 2 diabetes?
Treatment for this disease can include a combination of both lifestyle changes and medication, if necessary. Your doctor may recommend specific dietary changes as well as increased physical activity in order to help keep your blood sugar at a constant, healthy level. In addition, you or a caregiver will be taught how to measure your blood sugar at home and how to recognize and treat blood sugar fluctuations.
If diet and exercise alone are not enough to control your blood sugar effectively, your doctor may recommend injectable insulin or one or more medications to help lower high blood sugar.

How to prepare for hip replacement surgery

After undergoing an orthopedic evaluation, your doctor may discuss the option of  hip replacement. This surgical procedure is becoming a popular choice, as it offers relief from pain, improved mobility and significantly improved quality of life – but how should you prepare for it? Here’s some advice from short term rehabilitation providers from our assisted living community in Gloucester County.
  • Ask questions about your procedure: Your surgeon is the best source for information on what happens during your hip replacement, what joint is best for you and what you can expect as you recover. It’s a good idea to browse reputable websites like the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) or the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) for information and to help get ideas for questions to ask your doctors.
  • Get in shape: The healthier, fitter and stronger you are before your surgery, the easier your recovery is likely to be. Getting down to a healthy weight by eating right and exercising (be sure to ask your doctor what exercises will be safest and most comfortable for you) is always a good idea. Building up your upper body strength will also be a big help to you, as it will make it easier to move around on crutches or a walker during your recovery.
  • Meet your physical therapist: Not only will your physical therapist be able to help you with exercises for your general health, they can also take you through the exercises you’ll need to do to aid your recovery. Learning them before your surgery will make them easier to do post-surgery.
  • Speak to your insurance provider: Keeping in close communication with your insurance provider  will help ensure that you are properly covered for the surgery. They will also help you understand what your post-surgical coverage or benefits can provide.
  • Plan your recovery: While some patients do return home after surgery and recover with the help of friends and family, many patients find that it is easier and more beneficial to receive professional care. Short term rehabilitation providers can offer you  accommodations for your recovery that are  suited to your needs, as well as qualified therapists, nursing, meals and other assistance or support.

The best workouts for seniors

Exercise is part of living a long and healthy life – and that means staying fit as you age! There’s no reason for seniors not to enjoy having a healthy, strong body, and the benefits speak for themselves.
Seniors who maintain their fitness:
  • More easily maintain a healthy weight
  • Report fewer visits to the doctor, hospitalizations and falls
  • Usually recover more rapidly from falls, illness or injury
  • Suffer less from arthritis, heart disease or diabetes-related issues
  • Have lower blood pressure
  • Feel less stressed, depressed and are less prone to mood swings
  • Often have a more vibrant social life, due to shared activities
What exercises are best suited to seniors?
First, it is important that you speak to your doctor before making any changes to your exercise routine. Generally, seniors can benefit from a combination of exercise and physical activities:
  • Physical activities include gardening, walking the dog, hiking, using the stairs rather than the elevator, dancing, and other activities that get your body moving.
  • Exercises are planned, structured, repeated activities that target specific results. This can include resistance exercises (using weights or stretching, for example) or activities like tai chi, pilates, yoga, or aerobics.
If you are unsure what activities or exercises would suit you best, speak to a trainer or therapist who specializes in senior health after consulting your doctor. They will be able to find something that won’t just help you meet your health and fitness goals, but that you’ll find enjoyable, too.

Recognizing and treating depression in the elderly

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, so our CCRC in Sussex County is taking this opportunity to talk about a very real and serious senior health issue: depression.
Depression can happen to anyone, at any age or in any circumstance – it’s not a weakness or a character flaw. It’s also not a normal part of aging. Getting older comes with plenty of challenges  that can leave you feeling down, but that’s not depression. Everyone should enjoy their later years, which is why recognizing and treating depression in seniors is so important.
Symptoms of depression in seniors
Some signs of depression include:
  • Feelings of sadness and despair
  • Weight loss/loss of appetite
  • Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness
  • Insomnia, fatigue or oversleeping
  • Loss of self-worth
  • Slowed movement and speech
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
  • Neglecting personal care
  • Lack of energy
  • Loss of interest in hobbies, social events, etc. that were usually enjoyed
While sadness is a common symptom of depression, many patients don’t report feeling sad at all. Rather, they feel a lack of motivation, increased headaches and physical complaints like arthritis pain, and low energy.
Medical conditions can lead to depression
Certain medical conditions and medical treatment can cause depression as a side effect. Examples of these include:
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Thyroid conditions
  • B12 deficiency
  • Dementia
  • Lupus
Examples of medications can include:
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Beta-blockers
  • Sleeping pills
  • High cholesterol medication
  • Arthritis medication
  • Estrogen-based medication

5 things to consider when looking for hospice care

Hospice focuses on end-of-life care and many of us will have to consider it someday for parents, loved ones or ourselves. Finding the right provider is about choosing services that are appropriate for the patient’s needs, desires and budget. Here are some useful tips for making this important decision.
  1. Testimonials: Find out what people are saying about the hospice service providers you are considering – speak to local hospitals and doctors as well as families about their experiences.
  2. State licenses and accreditations: Each state has different licensing requirements for healthcare facilities to ensure that they are up to standard. Additional accreditations are not necessary, but they are considered a good indicator  of quality services.
  3. Services: It’s important to know exactly what services will be provided and how your loved one will be cared for. While some hospice facilities offer more limited services and staff per patient, others provide a team of specialists to deliver holistic treatment, companionship and support to patients as well as their families.
  4. Staff: Ask about staff training and experience, as well as how the staff is expected to interact with the patient throughout the day. Will there be someone on duty 24-hours a day? What happens in the event of an emergency? Will they be able to assist you in the provision of  any additional care to your loved one?
  5. Your impressions: If you want proper peace-of-mind, the best course is to visit the different facilities in person. This gives you a chance to get a good feel for the facility, their services and their staff. Scheduling a visit will ensure that you can properly tour the area, meet staff, ask any questions and evaluate their level of care.

5 advantages of choosing professional respite care services

Regardless of whether you’re a caregiver for a family member, loved one, neighbor or other person, it’s a very demanding emotional and physical job with long, unpredictable hours. On top of that, caregivers often also have to care for their own families and careers. Respite care services can lend a valuable helping hand. Here are just some of the many advantages:
1. Make recovery from hospitalization easy: If your loved one has recently undergone surgery or hospitalization, they’ll need more help than usual in order to recover and heal. Respite care services can manage complex health issues and deliver short term rehabilitation that will get them the highest quality healthcare and promote a faster recovery.
2. Permit vacation time: For caregivers with loved ones that can’t or don’t enjoy travel, family vacations can be a nightmare to plan. Responsible, highly skilled respite caregivers can ensure that the same high level of care is delivered to your loved one while you are away — giving you both peace-of-mind.
3. Give professional care a try: If caregiving is stretching you thin and your family member is unsure if assisted living is right for them, then booking a respite stay is a great way to see if the facility is a good fit. This will give them a no-pressure introduction to the community and a chance to see how enjoyable senior living can be!
4. Avoid burnout: Caregiver burnout is a very real and serious issue, both for caregivers and their loved ones. Family caregivers need to rest, relax and rejuvenate in order to deliver the level of care their loved one requires. Taking a break to deal with other matters in your life or just to free up your time becomes guilt-free when you choose professional respite care services.
